NROTC unit change advice

My daughter was not accepted to first choice school back in December, but did receive a 4 year NROTC scholarship. While waiting to hear from other schools, she changed the unit as per good advice listed here, to her 'safe' school, just to ensure that she would have a spot somewhere this fall. Now that she has been accepted to some other schools that will be a better fit for her, she needs to change her NROTC unit for the upcoming fall. She will be attending some upcoming accepted student events in April. My question is whether she should put in her transfer request now to a better school, before she visits them to again ensure her spot? My only concern for her is that if after visiting them she changes her decision again and needs to request a transfer if that would be a problem. She is really deciding between two very similar schools, but one of them is a cross campus unit while the other is on campus- the on-campus one is the school I think she should request the transfer to now, before it fills up. Just wondering others' thoughts and experience in this.
Thanks!

My first thought is to scold you for not having visited already. It's March for God's sake, but I expect there are reasons besides time. Personally I would recommend changing it to the school she most prefers, unless you're visiting in the immediate future. While visiting the cross-town campus make sure she understands the demands it will place on her and what the cross town does to make travel easier. Of course if it's just a 10 minute walk then it probably doesn't matter. I hope she plans on visiting with each unit and learning as much as possible about them, but I guess that goes without saying.

You're overthinking this. Unless either of the two units your daughter is considering have a recent history of reaching their freshman scholarship placement cap, you shouldn't worry about continuing to fire off change requests. Talk to the staff at the two units to get their recent loading numbers, but unless they have a history of hitting capacity, you are likely worrying over nothing. The number of available scholarships this year has fallen significantly when compared to just two years ago, yet placement caps have remained constant.

We did in fact visit both schools. One on a tour day and the other school and cross town unit no one was around That day to speak
with. She wants to go back to each school again just to clarify in her mind which is better (even though I feel it's better for her with the unit on campus choice, I want her to speak with students there to get their view.). It's not within walking distance but it is close for 10 minute drive on a Saturday, but she would have to arrange transportation. I'm sure weekdays will be longer. Thanks for the advice.

You're right, I probably am overthinking it! No one is around to speak with today due to weather so I'll call them tomorrow. But as a swimmer she prefers one over the other based on the pool. And obviously I'm her mom and "really don't know anything" according to my two teenagers!

As a teenager I can confirm that parents "just don't understand" haha

Hi all. New to this forum. My DS has been awarded a 4 year NROTC scholarship but was denied acceptance to his #1 school. He is now looking to request a transfer to University of Texas. Does anyone know if they fill their freshman quota annually?

I'm not sure about them specifically, but if it is this early in the game, my DD asked for transfer of her scholarship to different school and it was done by the next day! Send the form in asap to the school he wants, and you'll find out quickly. I faxed it over and within 24 hours- done!

Just realized, when I stated to fax it, I meant the NROTC request for transfer form to the NROTC headquarters, not the school. The info will be at the bottom of the transfer request form to email, fax or mail it. You don't send it to the school itself. Best of luck!
