I received my offer of appointment earlier this month. But I also received a speeding ticket this month. Does anyone know if this will cause the academy to revoke my offer. And do I let them know about the ticket?

Don't worry about a speeding ticket, celebrate your achievement[emoji322]

Are you sure? I don't know if the speed will impact it at all. I was going 89 in a 55, and yes I know how stupid that was.

I don't really know, but think about..... is it a one time event and did anyone get injured.

It could given how fast you were going. Much depends on the size of a fine, etc. Have you reported it? I think you're obligated to do that but look at your paperwork. You may not be obligated to report the infraction until you report to USNA. Again, check the paperwork. I expect you'll be OK. Do not be stupid again... that's the real infraction here... it's not speed, it's stupidity. The Navy will be asking, will he be stupid with a ship or with men?

it depends on your jurisdiction. in some locales, if you were traveling above a certain threshold speed, it is considered a reckless driving offense, a misdemeanor.

if so, you will be obligated to report the infraction to USNA and during your background security investigation.

btw, for those who are reading this thread, when my DS got his offer of appointment, his BGO said, "Congrats. Now, don't fail a subject at school and don't get a speeding ticket." wise words.

Don't ever just pay a citation for a moving violation. Ask the traffic court if you can get the ticket dismissed by taking defensive driving. You can usually take defensive driving online. Or ask the court about deferred adjudication - meaning if you don't get another moving violation in 6 months the ticket gets dismissed. Either program will keep the ticket off your driving record.

A speeding ticket isn't a big deal. If you're charged with reckless driving, that could be a bigger deal. For everyone going to USNA, remember that lots of things that aren't a huge deal in the civilian world will become a huge deal once you take the oath on I-Day -- and even before.

I once had a CO tell me, "I can accept all kinds of bad news, but I don't like surprises." I would recommend that the candidate be up front about the infraction; it's far better than to have USNA discover the matter on their own. Far better.

This happened to DS last year after appointment, though speed was not reckless. We were able to get the officer to reduce it to a non-points offense. We paid the fine and reported it to USNA. Got a shoulder shrug, but we both slept better knowing it would not come back to haunt. We reported both the receipt of the citation and then the subsequent adjudication. We were lucky that my brother-in-law is a lawyer so he dealt with the officer without passion entering into it and was able to make the case for the "good kid headed to USNA" who made a very minor error in judgment.

Ask, just FYI, I believe that generally (though your state may be an outlier) 20 mph over limit is considered reckless and over 85 is reckless. Unfortunately, you tick both of those. Might be worth a few hundred bucks for a lawyer that handles traffic violations.

Definitely worth a lawyer. We had a similar situation with respect to NROTC which we managed to keep off DS's record only because we had a lawyer. Nevertheless we reported it when the proper time came per the lawyer's advice and my sense of having been on this forum.

Agree with the above. Get a lawyer and take a defensive driving course. Do all you can to reduce the violation, don't pay the fine until it is reduced. Very much worth the money for a lawyer in my view.

I also suggest worst case, talk to the judge and tell him you are going to USNA and this might hurt you. Must judges are very sympathetic the kids who make DUMB mistakes, but are overall trying to better themselves. You might get a few days of community service, but hey, better than on your record....

One of DS' scout leaders was the traffic court commissioner for our area. He came just short of telling the boys (and their parents) to send a letter to the court ahead of time so it would be in your packet. Be apologetic, respectful and honest abouy your situation.

I'm sure you've been through the ringer on this one, that's quite a moving violation. Please be careful, you're an important piece in the puzzle!

That's like the highway to the danger zone. I feel your need for speed, but there is a time and place. Choose wisely.

Actually no:) I'm not now that I have seen the other responses. Bad situation but nothing that can't be resolved
