I have read different things about what color/length they can be, or if we are allowed to keep them at all. I was planning on bringing 4 pairs of black 6" and 2 pairs of grey 6" for BCT. Are these colors plain enough, or should I look into white?

Don't get white. You will regret your life's choices the moment they go through the wash. Go with black or grey. Mostly black.

Thank you! I figured those were the best choices. I'm hesitant about the grey, but I figure I will have enough to survive combined with boxer shorts even if they are confiscated.

Redstrike, I can say this--because I am a mom...but really, really really, leave those contraband boxers at home--save them for the school year when no one cares what sort of underwear you have on. You will need and want the compression shorts for everyday during BCT. There is a lot of running and jumping and that sort of thing. Also, if you have not worn compression shorts before, you might wish to try them out before BCT so that you are familiar with the fit and fabric and don't have to go through the awkward adjustment of new underwear while you are going through so many other adjustments and activities. My #1 Son really liked/likes the UnderArmor compression shorts--and burned through them with all of the field time at West Point--and like a true rookie back in 2012, I ordered white ones for him--those were about 20 of the 50 shades of grey before the end of Beast. Yuck. After that, it was just the black compression shorts. Good luck.

We sent about 12 pair of black and grey compression shorts with our DS to BCT. Do not forget to write your id in each pair before you pack. It should come in the reporting packet. As soon as BCT was over, my DS wanted and needed more underwear as they take quite the beating during BCT and the laundry tends to get lost from time to time.

Seems to be an item males need more than females; maybe some female present/former cadets can weigh in.

I'm a female Cadet that went through basic last summer. I strongly recommend compression shorts for both genders. They kind of become a staple part of your daily outfit, as they help prevent rubbing with the ABUs (which you wear everyday) and at least the basic PT shorts we were issued last year were pretty lousy and kind of see-through, so you'll want compression shorts with those too. Just bring conservative colors in what's comfortable, they aren't going to measure your shorts.

Would you say 12 pairs was just the right amount to bring?

Probably TMI, but Eastbay compression shorts are on sale for 2/1$14.99, women's 2/$24.99. DS runs cross country, and these have been his faves over Nike and UA for years. Doesn't hurt that they are a fraction of the cost, either.
THANK YOU for the heads up. That's an awesome price to buy those.

Doesn't the appointee packet say white only?

"Men MUST bring twelve pair of plain white underwear (boxer briefs must not extend
below mid-thigh) and eight plain white V-neck t-shirts."

I don't see where I'd be able to get away with grey or black....?

I'm a female appointee and am wondering what color underwear to bring. The instruction packet says to bring 8 white sports bras and 12 white underwear. A female fourth class cadet says the color of underwear do not matter as they do not check but bring white sports bras. Do they check the color of the underwear and sports bras?

They don't check either, bring what will be comfortable for you in a very active environment. I do suggest bringing white sports bras because you'll be wearing white t-shirts as part of your physical training uniform and you cannot have your bra showing through.

Great questions and great responses. I totally get it. But has the phrase of "going pioneer or commando" lost all applicability?

Perhaps today's textiles eliminate this option but ask a Vietnam vet about the subject...

I'm a male but working BCT. The physical conditioning shirts are partially see-thru. If you bring anything but white bras it will show through. At least when I went through BCT it was a big problem if they showed through. For the rest of your underwear go plain colors, but at least bring one or two pairs of white underwear. You'll need them later in the year anyway for the wonderful see thru parade pants. Again as a BCT Cadre I don't plan on doing any underwear checks.
