DS recently accepted appointment and we were wondering about boxing. We know that all plebes have to box but we are not sure if this counts as their mandatory sport or if they play another sport in addition to boxing.

Also wondering how competitive it is. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Doing a reach and assuming a parallel to USNA, with which I am familiar, boxing is part of the required PE curriculum.

I am sure those with better knowledge will chime in, but SA cadets and mids generally take required and elective PE graded courses, AND participate in varsity/club/intramural/specific other activities which count as "the sport," AND they have to stay in shape for required physical fitness tests. No lack of caloric expenditure.

A class in boxing is mandatory. You will participate in another sport in addition to boxing. Or you can join the boxing team and take it as a class and as your sport. You will spend a fair amount of time in sports activities.

Thank you! Helpful!

Tryouts for the boxing team begin after beast...approximately 3 ish weeks for the tryouts. Lots and lots of cardio and minimal boxing...but the team is fantastic and the coaching staff is great. But making the team is not guaranteed...Best of luck and congrats!

On a similar note, any Cadets here on the boxing team or anyone know someone on the team? Looking to try out and acquire information.

My son tried out, and said it was very tough. Mostly brutal runs. Not much boxing during the tryouts, but some, to assess toughness in general, as opposed to boxing skills. My son was cut, but encouraged to continue to work out with the team during the year, and try out next year again. He is an excellent athlete, but never boxed before. He said it was a great experience.

The boxing class is totally separate. They are taught boxing skills and training. Each kid has several bouts. They are graded on their performance. Every kid gets knocked around pretty good, and needs to fight hard. It's difficult to get a good grade. My son said the boxing tryouts helped him in the boxing class. Mostly I thing with understanding the mentality.

The lessons of the boxing class are far beyond learning to box.

To OP; every cadet is involved in sports. And unless you are on an NCAA or competitive club sport, you will be in company sports, and that sport will change each semester. My son is on crew team, which is a lot of work, but he enjoys being on the team. They travel to competitions and get to hang outside of WP which is a nice break.

Good stuff to know. My DD played a season of a D1 sport, but is debating between walking on in that sport, or trying out for boxing or rugby.

Sorry, I thought i posted this yesterday.

First year cadets take boxing, survival swimming and gymnastics (now called military movements) as a regular class from the DPE department. These are not really seen as a sport as they are an academic class. Your cadet will also have to participate in a sport during the academic year. He can do this on a DIV I team, a club sport or an intramural. BTW, DPE is still the department with a heart.

So what do they take as a plebe now?

Boxing and military movement. Half plebes have boxing first semester and others have milmove, then next semester they switch.

My son also took boxing class earlier this year. He said it was a great class- especially for teaching toughness to a lot of the kids who had not been in that sort of physical “threat” scenario before. Having taken Tae Kwon Do for years, he was familiar with the concept of a striking another person (and getting the same in return), but he commented that he had to resist the instinct to throw leg kicks in between punches. :) They do a good job of matching size and ability, and there’s some rules that limit to the number of big right hands to the head per bout; obviously a nod to concern over concussions. The other thing he mentioned was since they limit the rounds to only 1 minute and you’re getting graded on it, rather than the “strategic art of boxing” it was really “tactical punching”… pretty much non-stop punch-throwing and defense-be-damned until the bell rang. The real boxing team is very different in that regard I'm sure, but I think it is essential that these future officers to get to learn first-hand what it’s like to be under truly personal and physical attack… take some shots, and press the fight back onto their opponent. It's one of the classes that remind you it's not a regular college.

Ah.... ole' boxing class. The fond memories like the one where you only box with 1 hand (left hand for this bout) and I was put against a lefty (I am right handed)- not fun. Other fond memory was when I had a bout against a guy that was a kick boxer and I got a solid punch on him, stunned him and he instinctively raised his leg to start kicking. Ha.

I think the only plebes that swim are weak or non-swimmers - so called "rock swimming" - in prep for yearling survival swimming class.

That's funny. It reminds me of when my son was real young and after a t-ball game we went to a party at one of the families homes. They had a pool, and unbeknownst to my wife and I, my son decided to swim, before he learned to swim. Someone grabbed us after a parent noticed my son drowning and jumping in to save him. The host parent told us, "he said he was a swimmer". I looked at my son and said why you say that, and he reminded me that he swims in the bathtub. Lol. I told him, "you are a sinker not a swimmer". We made sure to teach him how to swim right after that. It's funny because he ended up on the swim team his senior year of HS.
