ive seen "remedial" a few times on here and it sounds like it's similar to a waiver. I'm wondering what this is? Can anyone explain what it is and what happens to needing one etc. Thanks!

It's when they find something on your DODMERB that could pose an issue, so you have to take further examinations to clear you. I had a heart murmur when I was 3 (haven't had any issues since) and had to get an echocardiogram to check it out. It's not a waiver. A waiver is for a current medical issue that would disqualify you, but a waiver ,if issued, would let it slide.

A candidate in DodMERB has three basic outcomes:
  1. qualified by DoDMERB, or
  2. disqualifed by DoDMERB or
  3. they need more information. Hence a remedial.

First a candidate goes through the DoDMERB questionnaire and examination. DoDMERB uses the questionnaire and the physician examiners notes to make a determination to notify the SA or ROTC authority if you are qualified or DQ'd. If DoDMERB needs more information, a remedial request is made of the candidate so they can make a more informed decision. The case 4Ryuan describes is one. Another example was a remedial request made of my DS who was in orthodontia at the time, and needed a DDS orthodontia questionnaire to confirm that DS would be completed and out of braces by the time he would report to the SA.

If a candidate is DQ'd, this information is provided to the SA or ROTC authority who can choose to either let it stand or request a waiver. DoDMERB never requests a waiver. Only the SA or ROTC authority does this, and on a discretionary basis.

I hope this adds clarity.

Thanks so much.
