Although it's not Europe, Bermuda, or Nova Scotia (as the 3/C's will enjoy this summer on Eagle) the incoming swabs will get 3 nice port calls during their summer training cruise.

July 24 Arrive Rockland, Maine - Embark 4/c 1st Phase
July 27 Depart Rockland, Maine

July 31 Arrive Portland, Maine - Embark 4/c 2nd Phase
August 3 Depart Portland, Maine

August 7 Arrive Portsmouth, New Hampshire - Embark 4/c 3rd Phase
August 10 Depart Portsmouth, New Hampshire

August 14 Arrive New London, Connecticut

From this schedule, it appears that Phase 1 (usually Alfa/Bravo/Charlie company) swabs will not be at Mystic for the flag ceremony on 7/25.

As always, Semper Gumby applies.

I know it's been asked and answered before....but I can't find the thread....when will the company's be announced? Will they know prior to R-day? I believe the answer is yes....?

Thanks Luigi...you are a gem

They'll get a letter (with their mailbox address, company assignment, and reporting-in time) sometime in June (2 weeks before R-Day?) with that info.

I believe that the info was also available on-line to the incoming swabs last year as well.

Thanks Luigi. That sounds right to me, from what I remember last year on this forum. I am studiously trying to stay out of son's pile o'paperwork, even though I suppose there is a bunch of good info in there. It's his gig. Mine is stalking the message board for advice from the seasoned vets out there!

Have a good day.

So, do I understand correctly that all the swabs will have an opportunity to sail on Eagle during one of those three phases? When the Eagle is in one of those ports, can visitors come and see the ship? Would they be allowed to speak to/visit with a swab? I am just wondering what the possibilities are, since we do have relatives near Portland, Maine and if my son were to be on that particular phase--or any phase for that matter.

Yes, all swabs will have the opportunity to sail on Eagle. However, every year there are a few who are held back for medical reasons (recent injury or sickness for example).

Yes! Usually, the ship is open for tours in almost every port she visits.

Yes! In many cases, not only will the swab have the opportunity to talk to family members while on board (giving the tour themselves or standing a watch) most (semper gumby) will have liberty at some time during the port visit, giving ample opportunity for family members to visit with the swab away from the ship.

Thanks Luigi. Is it difficult to communicate ahead of time though in order to visit at the right day, right hours, etc.? Obviously, one can't call a swab on his cell, so how does one go about making any plans ahead of time--and I realize that by "ahead of time" it may mean a matter of a couple of weeks only, or even days...suggestions?

1. Soon you will know your swab's company assignment for swab summer, so you'll have a good idea on which phase they will sail.

2. After R-Day - use the US Mail - $0.44 cents a letter is a bargain. Write every day. Expect 1 or 2 letters back.

3. They will get their cell phones back for Mystic, and they all with have them while they are on Eagle as well.

4. Join the National AND your local Parent's Association for up-to-date info.

5. Sign up for the 2013 Message List on the P.A. website for up-to-date info.

Excellent Advice-thanks

thanks again...very helpful...I need to join the parent's association--I think I just go on the CGA website, right?--I rather doubt we have one locally, but I will certainly check. This is all so very exciting. I could be wrong--maybe the swabs are too exhausted by the time their Eagle trip comes up--but I think I can see my son absolutely loving it...Possible? did you?

The Parents Association is linked into the rumor mill. My classmates and I were always a little scared of how much the parents knew. Sometimes they knew things before we did. The Parents' Associaition is also a great way to meet, and keep in touch with other parents. They're VERY supportive of the cadets.

The national parents association website is at http://www.uscgaparents.org

Depending on where you live, there might also be a regional parents association. They are not the same organizations, but are complimentary. The national website provides a lot of overall information and a great message, FAQ and photo area. Every local organization is run differently, so you will have to check up on yours....links are provided from the national website. We joined both organizations...

As to visiting your swab when on Eagle....go ahead if you want, but be prepared for anything. We decided to travel to San Francisco last year (had other business there as well). Daughters schedule changed about 3 times AFTER we had made reservations. It ended up we saw her for about an hour.

So you never know what will happen. My advice is to make the trip if you want to see the particular city anyhow, cause that's what you might end up doing! And if you see your swab for a couple of minutes, or a couple of hours, so much the better.

Swab is in Echo company, so according to the Eagle schedule, he would probably be in the 2nd Phase. If planning to tour the Eagle and hopefully see our son, should we be thinking the beginning of Phase 2, the weekend in Maine when they embark or the end when they arrive in New Hampshire?

My son is in Echo as well. We are clear across the country though, so we won't be able to see him before/after Eagle. So envious of the folks who might get a glimpse, however brief, of their kids! If you take pictures, will you post them on the CGA parents website? Would love to live vicariously through you. :thumb:

Sure will. We are about 3 1/2 hours from the Academy so we feel fortunate for the possible opportunity to see our son before Parents' Weekend. Nice to hear our sons are in the same company.

We visited our swab last summer on Eagle, and the ever present "Semper Gumby" was required. Their plans changed and they left the academy later then planned, got bogged down in weather, and didn't arrive at the Eagle till 4am! They were scheduled to depart at 10 that morning.

They needed a LOT of training in a short time before they left, but the commanding officer was nice enough to grant our swab 30 minuts to visit with us. You just never know what will happenn with the schedule.

My guess is that you would be better off visiting at the end of their tour, but again, you never know what could happen. Hope for the best, but realize you could possibly not see them at all. They have required things to accomplish while on the Eagle that week and visiting with their parents is way down the list.

Having said that....it was a great 30 minutes.....and the commander took pity on us  and asked if we wanted to hang around and join the cadets for lunch later. We gladly stayed, ate a hurried lunch in the wardroom, and wouldn't have wanted to miss it......so it all sort of worked out in the end.

Cell phones?

I understand no cell phones are allowed until after Swab summer, however, I did read on one of the forum responses that they may have their cell phones on the Eagle. If Jon is on phase one, how will he be able to get his cell phone prior to leaving if he does not have it with him on reporting day?

They pack all of those prohibited items away in the trunk room. Prior to departing for Eagle, they may go up and get them (the cadre will take them).

Cell phones?

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly, So we will plan on taking that up with us this weekend. I was only going to bring his ipod Aug 16 as well, so we will pack that too.

cell phones

Another option is to mail it to them a week or so prior to Eagle. They will have to turn it over to cadre when they receive it, but we made sure it was fully charged, etc....before we sent it.

Cell phones?

Thank you , I think I like that idea much better......do you know anything about the Aug 16 ceremony? I know I am getting ahead of myself, however, my husband has surgery scheduled and was wondering what the time line/schedule is for that day.
