I hope this question finds the right people to answer it?

Although my DS is still a candidate, he is hoping for the best result, while expecting less in this process. We must continue to plan out his future as if he will not get an appointment.

With that said, even with scholarship and grant money, we cannot afford to send him to a University, so he will be going to a Community College here in California.

He plans to work on any and all of his shortcomings that were on his application and reapply in this year.

While keeping in mind a college track for him to eventually transfer to a 4-yr university, what classes, if any particular, would help him on his application and to succeed in the academy, if he were to receive an appointment next year?

Apologies up front, if I didn't word this well enough?

Thanks in advance!!

CB_Dad_5,

The best classes to take would be those that mirror the Academy's first year core courses, which are great core courses for any 4-year STEM major. See the curriculum handbook, especially chapter 7: https://www.usafa.edu/app/uploads/CHB.pdf

And, if your local community college is anything like the one my DD attended, they will have the level of chemistry, physics, and math (thru Calc III) that will ensure success in future college or SA academics.

Fantastic!! Thank you so much!!!

Can you give a bit more information on where you think your DS needs improvement (i.e. Math, overall gpa, ACT/SAT, leadership)? This might help give you more suggestions.

We probably think it's ACT/SAT..

His overall application:

- GPA was 4.2 (4 AP classes each year. He took Calc BC of which he is the only student and is essentially teaching himself)
- Captain of Water Polo team
- 4 years varsity golf
- Eagle Scout
- CFA maxed in pushups, situps, pull-ups, mile 6:30, shuttle 8.8, basketball 59 feet
- Academic Scholar, all four years
- ACT/SAT 28 overall 660/660

That is basically where he stands..

He knows he needs to improve his ACT/SAT most likely, as well as his basketball toss, which he did FAR better when practicing.. He was nervous and choked a bit..

His run could be better as well..

But, it seems like his weak point would have to be his test scores?

Any help, is appreciated!!!

Thanks!!

A couple of suggestions; the first is the numbers are solid and above the median except for the test scores. I suggest retaking it and working on getting the superscore above a 30. If he enrolls and continues to do well then next year he should re-apply and stand a great chance at an appointment.

I also suggest reaching out to the ALO and letting them know the plan and asking for advice. Start letting your MOC know the plan as well. There are a lot of Cadets in the Class of 2020 who are second and third time applicants.

Best of luck.
