Nomination for USAFA Question

I am currently a junior in high school and I have a question concerning nominations for the academy. I visited the Air Force Academy this week while on spring break and while I was there I was told that my instructor was able to give me a nomination for the academy. My unit has had many cadets go to academies/rotc scholarships so my SNSI (instructor) has already mentioned the nomination to me before. But, if I was given a nomination through my instructor, would that be equivalent to a nomination from my local congressman? Also would it look better/improve my chances if I also applied for one though my local congressman? Do they look at where you got your nomination or only if you got one?
 
You should apply for all nominations that you are eligible for. The nomination is only part of the process. Once you get a nomination, you compete against the other individuals with the same nomination. Each MOC typically have one spot so ten individuals compete for that spot. The nomination from your instructor allows you to compete against others with an ROTC/JROTC appointment. For West Point, there are 20 slots for ROTC nominations. I'd assume that Air Force is the same. The competition for the ROTC appointments will be harder as you are competing against the entire country and most of them will have a semester of college. The process gives additional points for college that is not available to high school applicants.
