Listed as optional but recommended on packing list.
Should I let DD buy at C-Store or send along? Trying to keep packing light as possible.

If it's recommended, pack it. If your DD needs more, she can buy it at the C-Store, but her opportunities to visit the C-Store will be limited, and definitely accompanied by cadre during CBT.

Current Cadet here, would you mind posting the packing list they put out? I can help with items people should/ should not bring. @DD2021TX

It's a long list. Aside from basic toiletries here are the main items.

Multipurpose plier/knife
Sewing kit
Wristwatch
Black shoe polish
Shoe brush
Foot powder and blister pads
Disposable lighter
Address book, stamps, steno pad
Lip balm and sunscreen
Duct tape
Para cord

I recently started a thread for watches and got some good suggestions. You should be able to find it pretty easily

Is there a wristwatch that you would recommend?

There are multiple threads on watches across all SA forums, which would make sense for ROTC too. Try "watches" in Search box.

She wants duct tape. She will have to tape down straps, label items, etc. She may not be able to get to the C-Store for the first 3 or 4 days. I would bring it to R-Day.

@jagger19 I've attached the entire packing list. A few questions...
  • Is that small amount listed in a previous post a sufficient amount of duct tape?
  • How many pairs of socks/underwear would you recommend?
  • Once you review the list, please advise what is necessity and what is not.
Thanks so much!

Two rolls of duct tape is going to be fine to start with. You will visit the Cadet Store every few days, and can re-stock there.

For socks, just pack you bag with everything you need, then stuff it with all the socks that will fit. I brought about 8 pairs of Fox River socks, a dozen or so each of pairs of white and black socks, and for underwear I had an extra two dozen shipped in during Beast. Underwear and socks are huge because the laundry system is unreliable on timing, and you'll always need backups.

I will review the full list after class and post my full recommendations later.

You had your parents mail you 24 pairs of underwear?

See, it wasn't so much I had them ship me 24 pairs, as I asked for some more underwear and they sent me 24 pairs. I'm not kidding when I say the laundry service is unreliable. They've made two sets of my combat uniforms unserviceable, and lost multiple sets of PTs.

Underwear can be washed out in the sink...pack some liquid detergent in a small shampoo bottle. It's hot enough in the barracks for it to dry quickly. Some days you'll go through multiple pairs.

From my 2018 and 2019 DSs...they were very thankful they took extra compression shorts and extra socks! Bottom line... regardless if you pack the bare minimum or if you pack extra or if you pack everything that's on the suggested list, you'll be fine. Lots of differing opinions on this but it'll be alright. Good luck!

In regard to the general packing list, I read in an earlier post that some people bring very few items to R-Day but then mail themselves a package with anything else they might need a few days before R-Day. This seems like a great idea but does anyone know the earliest time you could gain access that package during BCT? I would like to do this but not if I can get to that package for a week or so.

The list of prohibited items says to not bring soap powder or liquid detergent. I'm uneasy about putting it in a small shampoo bottle, even though it is a good idea...
