VMI Important Dates

Matriculation is August 19

Oath Day is September 3

Parents weekend is September 22-24

Oath Day is very special, but you will only get to see your parents for an hour or so. Your parents will absolutely want to be there on parents weekend, because you will get to spend a lot of time with them, including late that Sunday night.

Thank you very much!

The Oath takes place at the New Market Battlefield. After the oath the rats and cadre charge across the battlefield, flags waving, to the cannon at the end of the field; good stuff. After the charge you have time to eat with your rat; you can bring food or purchase a lunch. Make hotel reservations NOW for any events you plan on attending.

The day they are allowed to call you towards the end of hell week.make sure they know your phone number that you will be at. They will not have their own phone to use speed dial.

Oath Day weekend can also be like a "mini-parents weekend". RATs can sometimes (not always) go out with parents on Saturday night and then have dinner with parents in Lexington in the evening on Sunday after the RATs have returned from New Market.

I'd like to add that not all Rats have the opportunity to call home during hell week, so don't be set on getting one, there's a window of time for each ac advisor to meet with their rats and if they have a lot, then there may be no extra time to call.

I thought I read that parents will be able to spend time after returning to Lexington on Oath day. Is that not true?

The same was true for 2016; we were able to take her to dinner in town that Saturday night, and after the Oath ceremony she had a couple hours that Sunday evening.

However, she nervous being in town as a new rat, so after dinner we just went to the hotel for a couple hours, and she promptly fell asleep. On Sunday, she was exhausted after the day of events at New Market and napped in the hotel for a couple hours while we sat in the lobby. Being a new rat is mentally and physically exhausting. While she very much appreciated that we were there, we really didn't spend any "time" with her....she just had a safe place for some shut eye for a couple hours.

My point with my previous post is that if you can only visit for one event (Oath weekend or Parents weekend), you will have MUCH more time with your rat on parents weekend, and it will be actual quality time.

Your rat will be happy if you can attend both, but if you must choose I'd choose parents weekend.

Does it jump straight from hell week into the academic year the next day or how does the transition work?

From looking at the calendar and remembering what my DS said when he went through it, I think the hell week goes right up to the day the "old corps" returns, then the next day is registration for classes and then the day after that classes start.

The last full day of hell week is a Saturday, followed by Rat Sunday (church in the morning, crucible in the afternoon), then registration day (there's nothing you have to do other than formations, but you should go locate all where all your classes are, buy any text books that you know you'll need, etc...). Classes start the following Tuesday.

Falcon A is correct. The Old Corps returns that Sunday after hell week, Monday is registration for Rats and Tuesday classes begin.

You will have some down time on that Sunday; you can go to church and most churches have a place to hang out for a few hours and they will also provide food. Even rats that aren't religious pick a church to attend during the ratline!

I highly recommend picking a church or attending chapel on post, even if your aren't religous. As EOD/SEALMOM said they have areas for rats to chill or host families so you can get off post. If you attend chapel on post the Asst Chaplain takes the Rats to a bed and breakfast in town after the service. They get lunch, a bible study, dinner and then head back to post. They also had some downtime to watch TV or call home.

You are going to want a break from the Ratline.
