Not sure what my kid is thinking but he signed up for this major.
Here is his probable schedule for next fall.
Principles of Aerospace Engineering 1
Engineering Mechanics foe Aerospace Engineering
Ethic and Moral Reasoning for the Naval leader
Basic navigation
3/C Swimming (he is a sinker)
Differential Equations
General Physics 1

Dang! What ever happened to Poly Sci and fly?

Hahaha. That is a pretty typical schedule for a group 1.

Isn't that norm for all Midshipman ? Even as Poli Sci, I usually had 20-21 hours, and I only had one semester (First Class Year) that I didn't have to use a a calculator. I wasn't real sympathetic when my daughters complained about having to take 17-18 hours at civilian schools.

The "poly-Sci and fly" was a joke
no offense intended
I get the feeling that there is no easy major at USNA

You are correct. If you look up the required coursework of every graduate, even in liberal arts, it is insane. I have a print-out of the required load (minus the technical courses in the major), and I am amazed every time this Arts major mama looks at what her kid is doing! He is tier 2.

None taken.... the saying in my day was "poli sci...qpr high". Each major has its own challenges, but the common theme is that the work load at USNA is hard. USNA has a first rate academic program, and then you pile on military duties, professional training, mandatory athletics, etc. and its certainly the "NotCollege". The engineers had it tough, as they had (and maybe still do) a handful of core classes with long time professors who had a reputation for making life miserable, and they also had to take a harder version of electrical engineering (ie. "cables " instead of "wires") , but the bottom line is that Naval Officers are expected to be technically proficient. Even "bull"(Group 3) majors get a BS (instead of BA ) degree, and it's earned --my transcript includes Calculus, DiffEq, Chemistry, Physics, Thermodynamics, Wires, Naval Architecture, Weapons Systems Engineering (essentially Applied Physics) .

Hmmmmm. I keep seeing these posts. Our mid said he doesn't know what his schedule is and they have only turned in preferences so far and not actually registered for next year yet. Is it done by company and they haven't gotten to his company yet?

My guess is they haven't officially been released, but some midshipmen have found a back door way to find them. Happens every semester. They wouldn't be accessible from the "View Schedule" or whatever it was on MIDS, but they could be figured out from class section rosters.

DS texted Monday saying he had just registered for next semester and was taking 21 credits as an English major!

Ha! Yours and mine will be joined at the hip. Even the sinking problem: he was thrilled he didn't drown during the recent final. #stayontheboat

You will find this at all of the academies. Our junior at USAFA hasn't had a semester less than 18.5-19 and our WP plebe has had the same and more as a soon to be engineering major. None of this stretching things to 5 years.....like I did at StateU

My family and friends are encouraging me to take the lightest load possible at school next fall (12-15 hours) in order for me to get good grades my first semester and to make it easier for me to transition to life at a senior military college... But my heart and brain are looking to resubmitting my naval academy app next december and I know I need to be taking 18-19 hours. Thoughts on this?

I don't think this will happen but concerning my USNA application, what will happens if I can't take calculus my first fall semester and have to take it in the spring?

Sorry to hi-jack the thread (just kidding, no I'm not) but as I'm simultaneously planning for my degree and reapplying to the academy, some insight from grads & parents who have gone through the college reappliation process would be helpful
Thank you in advance

If you think 3/C year sounds bad, wait until he/she hits 2/C.

^^No joke. My DD will be starting her 2/C year next fall and she told me what her courses will be. It will be her toughest semester yet. I couldn't believe the course load.

All those whose first post is asking about get recruited for sports should read this thread.
you're not kidding...went to SS last year and was with a recruited football player, whom I had met once before he started USNA, flat out said he was an average B student in HS and went to straight D's with an F and was on academic probation. Had a 27 ACT score too.

I took 23 credits first semester 2/C year. Two free periods a week on two separate days, with three six-ins. Ironically, the second-highest semester QPR I had. Worst part of a packed schedule isn't the semester; it's having a stacked finals schedule at the end of it: Studying for two finals a day for three consecutive days and still having a seventh final before going home.

Mine doubts if he will have much time for extra curriculars next year. With that schedule he may not have much time for anything.

You'd be surprised how much time seems to free up once you aren't doing plebe things. I'd encourage him to try to participate in at least something extra. That's the key to maintaining your sanity there.
