We know that USCGA has a swimming requirement everyone has to pass but I can't remember where I saw it. Can someone direct me to the website or link for that information or tell us the exact requirements?

Just out of curiosity, is everyone here proficient in swimming and treading water? DD is CGAS, but she's not a good swimmer. She'll be taking lessons before she reports, but will she be ok with the requirements?

Per cadet handbook -

Note: All cadets are required to achieve a minimum combined score of 165 points on the PFE by the
end of their first semester – this is the same test (cadence push-ups, sit-ups, and 1.5 mile run) you took
during the application process. If you do not score at least 130 points on the PFE given at the
beginning of Swab Summer you will be disenrolled. Additionally, your swim skills will be evaluated;
the swim test includes a 100 yard swim, three meter jump, and five minutes of treading water. The
swim test is used for evaluation purposes only and cadets will not be disenrolled based on performance.

I seem to have read "somewhere" that it's not required to be a great swimmer. However there will be many who are strong swimmers. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, the unit as a whole is strong. My DS is a competitive swimmer.

Please take a look at the Cadet Handbook - I found a copy of the CO 2015 handbook online and it indicates that swim skills will be evaluated during Swab Summer. The swim test includes a 100 yard swim, three meter jump, and five minutes of treading water.

Do you know if it's the same requirement to graduate or is this just for initial evaluation? Also, does anyone know if CGAS will be evaluated too over the summer or just the SWABS?

The "requirement" is taking and passing two swim classes during your first two years. The first one is basically swimming 101 during your fourth class (freshman) year. They teach you all of the different strokes, it's basic stuff. The second class is during your sophomore year and is called Professional Rescuer. There's a classroom piece where they teach you CPR and AED usage. The swim piece is geared towards basic lifeguard certification with a few tests. You come out of it Red Cross certified.

I've never heard of or seen anyone disenrolled or placed on probation for swimming. The coaches are great and they'll make sure your DD is good to go.

I can't remember if CGAS swims or not during swab summer but if they do, it's unlikely that there's an evaluation.

OK, great! Thank you!!!

This is anecdotal, but when at AEP, the football coach spoke to the group and said they can work with the cadet no matter what their swim level.

The PFE must be passed at the start of each semester. I believe that the PFE to graduate is higher than 165, but Track and Field 08 can speak to that.

The short answer is that in order to graduate, you must score a 200 on your final PFE which takes place before the start of the second semester in January.

The longer answer is that the passing score for all classes after swab summer is a 200. If you do not score at least a 200, you are placed on remedial probation. There are two levels of probation. Level I is if you score lower than 200 but above your class standard. Level II is if you score lower than your class standard. The class standards are:

4/C (Freshmen): 165
3/c (Sophomores): 175
2/c (Juniors): 185
1/c (Seniors): 200

As you can see, if you do not pass a senior, you are automatically placed on Level II probation. The difference between Level I and Level II is basically how closely they monitor your workout routine. People on Level I have to submit their workout routine on a weekly basis to the PE staff onboard until they pass the test. Level II people are required to attend morning workouts geared to getting you in enough shape to pass. They're not fun.

The other caveat is that once you are placed on probation, you must pass the PFE twice in order to get off of probation. So, if you're on Level I probation, you must score a 200 twice before they take you off. If you're on Level II probation, you have to pass above you class standard twice, then you are moved up to Level I probation where you then have to get a 200 or above twice before you're taken off. PFEs during academics are conducted during lunch periods so then you miss out on that as well. So, if you're on Level II probation, you will at a minimum take the PFE 5 times rather than just the once a semester deal everyone else goes through.

Moral of the story, workout and avoid probation. The PFE sucks, especially on an indoor track w/ little ventilation, but it sucks less taking it once than taking it 5 times. I had classmate get kicked out the WEEK of graduation for not being able to make weight/pass the PFE. You don't want to be that guy.

Is the PFE always done on the indoor track or do they do it outside during swab summer/warmer months?

Essentially 5th deck is where your nightmares come alive. In every regard - Finals, PFE, Change of Commands at Foul Wx Parade, and random uniform inspections during the winter.
