Apple watch

This is a very recent thread on watches - the watch threads pop up every year. A Search on "watches" works.

watches during Plebe summer?

IMPO, it's probably not worth it to wear to I-Day. After PS, you can figure out the uniform and grooming regulations about what watches are allowed in uniform and what will work best for you as a mid. Remember you will only have your iPhone periodically during PS.

Casio G-Shocks seem to be a current favorite across all SAs.

I am sure current mids or recent grads will offer good input.

Your PTR will have specifics, probably in the section about cell phones, jewelry, electric shavers and cosmetics. If it's the same as last year, you can bring a watch. It will be stored for you until after PS. You can't wear it.

Edit: Currently there are prohibitions against having smartphones or other devices with wifi and other capabilities in certain secure spaces for information security reasons - but that's way down the career path for you. Tech will no doubt have pushed more boundaries by then!

I had the same question... Apple Watches only have internet capability when paired with a phone, so during PS when the phone is stored away, it's basically a glorified fitness tracker (which is pretty much what I use mine for anyway), so I'm not really sure if we're allowed to have them or not...

You are not allowed to have a watch during Plebe Summer, nor the ability to have a charger for it. You could bring it and use it during Plebe Parents Weekend, though I am not sure if it will still have any charge left by then. It would be interesting to see how much calories one burns during PS though...

No doubt. My DS looked like a twig at PPW. I'm guessing that he dropped at least 10 lbs, if not 15.

Just on a normal football 4 hour endurance training day in our 99 degree summers, DS burns 4-6,000 calories. A fitness tracker has been remarkable for his progress of losing 35# and transitioning from lineman to plebe size without sacrificing muscle [emoji15]

Did he gain all that back, or just the lean muscle mass? ;)

He went from lean muscle mass to LEANER muscle (dad, feel my washboard abs) mass back to lean muscle mass (i.e., he's gained it back and probably another 5 of muscle)

Because there is so little that plebes can have in the way of personal items, we considered giving my son an Apple watch this past Christmas. When we asked him if this was something he'd like, he replied that he would probably find it annoying and distracting, because the mids get such a high volume of emails. If you want something your mid can use to track activity, a Garmin may be a better (and less expensive) choice.

Agree regarding the Garmin watch. My soon-to-be 2C has one and loves it. He has maxed every PRT from PS moving forward and timing his training runs has made that part of the PRT a non-issue.

I do not believe the Casio G Shock watches are the watch of choice anymore on the Yard. The Apple/Garmin/Fitbit-type watches are all very common now.

On a side note, my mid will be a detailer this summer and his only comment has been "the plebes better be ready for a lot of running and push-ups".
