All,

I did not receive a national ROTC scholarship on the last board, but was excited to learn I have received a campus 3-Year Advance Designee scholarship from the school I will attend this fall. I am very excited for fall and training hard this summer for APFT.

Is there much difference between a National Board 3-year scholarship and a campus based scholarship. My first impression is little difference as both require one to work hard year freshman year to be in good standing to receive scholarship award for years 2-4. Is there much of a difference?

Thanks for your thoughts!

My DS received the campus based 3 year AD scholarship two years ago and in fact it was extended another half year before the end of his first semester.

To the best of my knowledge, the only difference between the National and the campus based scholarship is that the National scholarship can be transferred to another AROTC school in your application list. It is much more difficult, if not impossible to move a campus based ticket. (ROO's please chime in).

The culture at my DS's battalion is pretty much such that cadets are either contacted or not contracted. No different treatment for national vs campus based scholarship winners.

Congratulations!

The difference between the 4 year scholarship and the 3 year campus based scholarship is one year's tuition only. All cadets are treated the same and have the same opportunities with the exception of any summer training which is only open to contracted cadets. (note: AROTC-dad's comments on transfer sound accurate but I too would defer to some of the ROOs on this site).

If you have a 3 year scholarship (national or campus based) are you considered contracted, and eligible for summer training between your freshman and sophomore year?

My understanding is that you are not considered "contracted" until the scholarship kicks in at the sophomore year (for a 3 year advanced designee) and you have to be contracted to be eligible for the special summer training programs. In my son's case he WAS eligible because they contracted him after his fall semester, extending him to 3.5 years.

Here is an older thread on this topic:

The summer training question is correct. Even though my DD was going to contract second semester she could not apply for CULP or any other training with a fall applicanation due date because she was not contracted at time of application. In contrast in the Spring after she was contracted, when the list came out of open slots for Air Assault school (the batallion is local to where the training would beat Camp Riley) she was asked if she was interested.

And +1 to above responses! The only difference to campus based versus national 3 year AD is where the money was awarded from. Advanced Designee standing is the same. They will know when you come one campus that you are already a recipient, and as long as you do your part with participation, academics, pass DODMERB and pass your fitness test, you will contract. @Georgia1998 , do you mind sharing where you will be attending? And congratulations, that is very exciting!

No. A cadet is not contracted until they sign a DA 597-3 or DA 597. 3AD winners are not contracted until first semester, sophomore year.

Can a three year ad army ROTC scholarship become a four year later? If so, under what circumstances?

DS had his 3 year upgraded to 4 year last year. If I remember correctly he was awarded the 3 year in the 2nd board and then upgraded after the 3rd board. I’m assuming he had a better overall score than the 3rd board candidates. It’s also possible to earn a campus based scholarship which I think would typically get you to a 3.5 year.

If you know you want to do summer training, such as CULP, is there any way to contract early as a 3 year AD?

My understanding is that you must be contracted for CULP or any summer training schools such as Airborne.

However I believe you CAN apply for Project Go without an ROTC contract or scholarship as it is sponsored by the Department of Defense for any student enrolled in ROTC (all branches). It pays for language study either domestic or abroad including cost of travel.

My understanding is that the only summer training opportunity that is restricted to contracted cadets is CULP - the others are open to all cadets, I believe. By the way, congratulations -and, I didn't know you could earn a campus-based ad scholarship before you even step on campus!

No. The only way you would be able to go to CULP after Freshman year is if you got upgraded to 3.5yr scholarship, and contracted at the beginning of the Fall semester. Most schools will not do an upgrade as it usually expends an additional scholarship allocation.

However, you can apply to go on a CULP mission after sophomore and junior years (once contracted); it isn't only freshman that are eligible to apply.

Being that you can quit anytime before Sophomore year (with scholarship), you dont contract until Sophomore Year. For those without a scholarship, in AF Rotc, you dont contract you complete Lead Training during the Summer and start Junior Year

Hi All. I'm new to this thread but have a question if anyone is still monitoring.

My son who will be an incoming college freshman the fall of 2019 was offered a campus based 3-Year AD Scholarship for his 2nd choice college, where he has already been accepted. The deadline to accept the 3-Year AD Scholarship is 28 March 2019. He also has to acknowledge that, once accepting the campus based scholarship, his name would be removed from consideration at the third national board. He took the offer because he is very satisfied with 2nd choice college, it was a bird in the hand and he was told he could request a transfer of the 3-Year AD scholarship if he wished.

His 1st choice college will notify him if he is admitted on 1 April 2019. If admitted, he will request a transfer the 3-Year AD Scholarship to that school. Both his 1st choice and 2nd choice colleges are in the same city and belong to the same ROTC Battalion.

Does anyone have experience with within battalion transfers of campus based 3-Year AD Scholarships? His ROO said that he would have to make the request with CC. Is he anymore likely or less likely to be approved since it is with the same battalion?

Any feedback will be appreciated.

A couple of weeks later, but hopefully this will help! My daughter was offered a 3-year scholarship at the end of March at 2 of the 3 colleges she put down on the application, and the one she was not offered was the one that she really wanted to go to and that she had already accepted. It is a school that has the program she wants to pursue (as the others do not). All she did was to write a very professional and detailed letter and sent a transfer request in (per the scholarship notification) and she found out a week later that it was approved! She is more motivated now than I have seen her before!
