Hello,

I am a currently taking a year between high school and college due to unexpected financial trouble with attending college. I now have decided I would like to definitely enroll in AROTC when I begin next fall. However I made the grave mistake 6 months ago of experimenting with marijuana approximately 4-5 times while on a trip abroad as well as a very, very small amount of ecstasy that produced no affect. This was an isolated event and occurred within a time span of a little less than three weeks. I had not tried any drugs prior to this and have not tried any after this. I will not use drugs ever again as they are not for me and I recognize that even without getting in trouble for them they still have consequences on your life. I intend to be honest when filling out all forms for ROTC and am willing to produce evidence of drug testing from a job I held prior to the experimentation (was not employed when it occurred) and of drug testing from my next employer after. Additionally if it will help I am willing to be drug tested more than you regularly are in ROTC.

What I am curious to is what my chances are of enrollment, will I need a wavier and if so what are my chances of receiving that? I have discovered a strong urge in myself to serve and feel that without serving I will have missed out on something in life. I have made no trouble in my life other than this mistake and will continue to make no trouble while trying to be a good person. I received high grades in high school and was active in my school community and plan to continue this in college.

All comments and help are appreciated. Thank you.

Honestly if you were never caught there wouldn't be any record of it. If there's no record of it there isn't really a point to disclosing it. But, if you did disclose it, you still might be ok to enroll. From my understanding they want to assess the ability of the applicant to commission. So, if they found out about drug use and you lied about it, you would be declared unfit to be an officer for lying and kicked out of ROTC/Army.

Oh where to start.... First be honest without getting into details. You can say you tried marijuana once on a vacation & promise never to do it again (no need to state 4-5 times). The ecstasy would probably diminish your chances? Maybe other more experienced forum members can answer that question better. But as a mom, I want to scream, "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!"

MJ 4-5 times over 6 months ago will not be an issue as long as it never happens again. Whether or not you became intoxicated by the ecstasy is not relevant. Ecstasy use requires a waiver from the CG of Cadet Command. I do not know if he is granting waivers for that.
