General Questions for 2021

When you decide to come ashore, keep your license active and place it in a glass box with a small hammer and a sign that reads: "In case of job frustrations, loss or a-hole boss, break glass"

I kept mine up for some time. As a Class Surveyor, I could renew based on my job. About the time I shifted to Insurance work, the rules changed a bit. I did a couple of continuity renewals, but gave that up some time ago. But yeah, I hung on to mine "just in case" for some time. I still have mine framed. . . .

When all you had to do was three 50-question multiple choice take home tests, it was hard to justify NOT renewing. Now with the additional classes you need for the STCW "international" license I will probably not renew that one anymore and just keep my "domestic" license.

I was told that the USMMA have the flexibility for you to serve in any U.S. arm forces once you graduated but you have to through OCS before being commissioned in that arm force that you chose. My question is, is that even possible? I read the service obligation on the USMMA website and found that many of them are mentioning serving in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, or U.S. Merchant Marine, barely anything about serving in any other arm forces (which is understandable but it doesn't give much information as to what the service obligations are for those who are choosing their career path in other branches). I am aware that once we graduate we have to maintain the USCG license for 6 years. I'm planning to pursue the career of flying in the AF or the Navy (right now considering the AF). Has there been any USMMA graduate that crossed commissioned to being an Air Force Officer? If so, what are the chances?

The information you are seeking is on the USMMA website. It is not Cross Commissioning...it will be your commissioning service upon graduation. If you look at some of the graduations on You Tube you will see various uniforms from each service being worn.

USMMA receives Active Duty slots each year from the different services. I was told that this year they had 10 Navy Aviation slots for graduating Seniors. There are opportunities for Army and Air Force depending on the slots offered to USMMA each year...I do not know how many are flying slots.

5 Years Active Duty will meet one of your obligations after graduation.

I have heard that AD Navy goes straight to training assignment. Marine Corps goes to OCS, and I believe the other services have a "mini-OCS" to integrate into that service. That is only what I have heard...no personal knowledge or experience.

Once past the 6 year point, make sure to renew your license "for continuity purposes only" rather than just letting it expire.

Hey-o, just got my equipment list for Indoc and I'm planning on getting the package. Is there anything that's missing from the package that I should bring extra?

I'm pretty sure they tell you what to bring in logging in, if you've gotten that yet. And yeah, you basically have to get the package. I don't know a single person who didn't get the items from package.

Definitely get the package. I bought extra shirts, shorts, socks, and underwear through the NEX which came in my package on Day Zero. Everything you will need for Indoc and the first month or so is in the packages. I brought nothing but some basic toiletries with me on Day Zero and it worked perfectly.

So Monday-Friday is the same routine for the most part:
0545-wake up
0600-morning muster
0605-0635-breakfast
0635-0655-cleaning stations
0720-colors
0745-1200-morning classes
1210-1300-formation and lunch
1300-1600- afternoon classes
1600-1830ish-sports/working out/clubs
1730-1930-cafeteria style dinner
2000-"Tattoo"-meeting for plebes in company
2200-doors close/taps

Then Saturday and Sunday vary depending on your activities/sports/homework but are usually a good time to catch up on sleep or just hang out with your friends. This year plebes have liberty every Sunday from 0800-1800, and can apply for more through "long weekends" or "special liberty". You will also have to factor in that you'll probably have watch-4 hour tour- around once a week.
How does that work with the Sunday Liberty? What do the plebes do with the liberty?

I heard from some people that the pre ordered NEX packages will be to your room, is that true? I already have stuff like white crew socks and crew neck t shirts from being at prep school and I'll be bringing that and some toiletries stuff. So during indoc, do you get a chance to visit your room to drop everything off and come back out later? What does the schedule look like?

Plebe Sunday liberty is just meant to give plebes a little break from the Academy. Usually plebes will just go into Great Neck, get some food, go to the store and hang out. Some go into the city and explore. Others just use it as more time to sleep.

For our INDOC the packages weren't delivered to the room, instead we had to pick them up from the central storage and bring them to our room on the first day. About visiting your room beforehand, no way. Once you go in in the morning your at the mercy of the DIs. You'll be constantly going for about an hour before you go to your room and can throw stuff down before you're off again. Again, THE LESS STUFF THE BETTER.

Question... I know that it was recommended to have a few extra t-shirts, socks, and underware. What about PT gear? How many PT shirts cotton, PT shirts poly, and PT shorts are issued? Also, what color are the Compression shorts that are in the Personal Items Kit? My son already has black ones and we were wondering if he could bring them as extras. Thanks

Last year it was two cotton, two poly, and three shorts. I bought extra through the kit and don't regret it at all. There were times when some had to re-wear dirty PT gear since they didn't have enough. Yes the issue compression shorts are black.

Thank you kp2020mid. That helps me when ordering this week from the NEX. How many extra cotton and poly t-shirts, and and shorts would you recommend? I am thinking we will order more to make 5 of each, but space may be limited and I don't want to over do it. Re-wearing dirty PT gear could be stinky, LOL. You also just saved me some money by letting us know that the compressions shorts are black. YEAH!!

Thank you again kp2020mid. It is nice of you to answer our questions, it is a big help.

No problem, its the least I could do. In total I probably have about 10 shirts and 10 shorts, all of which I ordered from the NEX before INDOC.

When did you guys start to get liberty? About how long/ how many weeks after acceptance day?

Thank you!

I started to get liberty in april, about 7 months after acceptance day. Before that I barely left campus, except for fall, christmas, some special authorized libs. But when you do get liberty as a plebe, you will be in uniform. Liberty in uniform kind of sucks. I'd rather sit around and do nothing than have liberty in uniform.

What about being in uniform specifically makes liberty no fun?
