Commissioning Day!!

DS' Commissioning day this am as well. Even more meaningful and touching than my husband and I had expected. I wish I had a transcript of guest speaker Major General Rapp eloquent words.
It was a treasured day seeing these accomplished young men and women with their loving families and friends. We wish all the new officers success, safety and peace
as they embark on their service to our country.

DS commissioned Army two days ago with Sgt Major DH giving first salute. So proud of all our DS and DD's who have made the choice to serve. They have rare honor and integrity in today's world.

I understand that the first salute is purely ceremonial, but it was definitely a milestone in how I regarded my DS. That was in May 2015.

The next was when he faced down an E-8, as an O-2, in the disciplining of an E-3. He sided with the E-3 not with the E-8.

Good for him!
The first ceremonial salute didn't do it for me. What did it for me was driving through the gate at Quantico with him and watching the guard give a very smart salute. Never tire of that, nor do I tire of watching him salute. While still in NROTC he saluted me once in his Navy whites as I drove through a gate to park my truck... sent shivers up my spine and made my entire month.

DS was part of the color guard team at this year's commissioning ceremony so we made the trip to see the event.

13 cadets became newly minted 2LT's. The program was really moving. They showed candid baby photos along with military portraits on the big screen as people arrived. A two star general made a great speech. Parents cried while pinning the boards (good idea to practice this beforehand).

And one retired Marine dad did the first salute with his son and during the handshake he yelled "oo-rah" and busted up the mostly Army crowd.

I now have something amazing to look forward to in May of 2019.
