Hey, I have a question about applying for ROTC: Is the MROTC application process different from that of the NROTC?

Well, it's the same application, you just check a box saying you're applying for Marine Option. There are a few minor differences in the process, which PFT you do, who you interview with, etc. You MUST chose either Navy Option or Marine Option. You cannot apply for both.

and you still have to apply to stay Marine Option after your first 2 years of NROTC; even if accepted there is no guarantee of getting a commission

Like @NavyNOLA, I don't follow what you are saying. My understanding is that you enter EITHER NROTC or NROTC/MO as a college programmer. If you are a scholarship winner, you are on track to commission so long as you meet the requirements. If you are college programmer (non-scholarship), you cannot enter the advanced program after two years without being offered a sideload or a contract.

(@kinnem and @NavyNOLA are more expert at this that I am).

Not following this one either. USMC on scholarship is a guarantee active duty commission pending you successfully meet all requirements. Same with Navy. The big difference is USMC has the Bullodg program at OCS as a requirement. Not a cake walk and most successfully complete the program to receive a commission. Advance standing is similar to Navy in it must be obtained to continue past the second year. If someone obtains advance standing they will commission active duty as long as they meet all requirements to include OCS on the USMC side.

So is the Navy andMarines guarantee commissioning AND active duty? I think Army and Air Force leave themselves wiggle room for a Reserve commission by adding "needs of the force' or something like that. Just curious.

Yes. NROTC & NROTC/MO both result in active duty.
