Hi all, been reading these threads and seen some conflicting advice. I know they need to bring sneakers and toiletries, but if you buy the kit from NEX, is there anything else recommended? Can you bring your own underwear of choice, or does it have to be the gov't issued type? Does it have to be white? Do you suggest buying more of anything? ie: t-shirts / underwear? What do you suggest you bring your personal items in with..backpack? Also, how do you get sized for the uniform? Do they measure you at indoc? I know its a lot of questions.

Thanks

Hey, so I'll just tell you what I did. I bought the kit from the NEX and then added on: five pairs of shorts, five shirts, three towels, two packs of white underwear and white socks. I brought two or three pairs of underwear and socks in a duffel bag with my toiletries, nothing else. I packed very light and it turned out ok. As for uniforms, everything is done during INDOC- measuring, trying on, shoe fitting, all that. Let me know if you have any questions!

Some white underwear is required. Pink hearts and red polka dots don't do well under summer whites.

This made me snort - and instantly recall "Leftenant" Clive Very-British-Surname, RN, on exchange duty with my unit, who put the rank behind him in convulsive silent laughter at a formal summer uniform inspection by wearing red polka (big) dot boxers under his much-thinner RN cotton whites. He knew exactly what he was doing. He said we needed "a spot of fun." Love that dry humor.

Clearly, that is why the package from the NEX comes with white underwear in it and why I said "two packs of WHITE underwear and WHITE socks".

My comment regarding pink hearts and red polka-dots was based on a similar experience. Someone with a less than full and complete dedication to rules and regulations looking to bring some levity to Saturday parade.

Alright, so this is trivial in the whole scheme of things, but white underwear (mens) but with a black band...yea or nay?

Probably OK for summer whites because the waistband of the pants is significantly thicker/heftier then the rest of the pants and the black band wont show through. Definitely acceptable for any other uniform.

Nothing is trivial ... Attention to detail!

I agree! Thanks for the advice.
