CFA scoring

West Point sent my son an actual numeric score with No Risk in any category after his CFA this week. I have a question about the actual scoring of the the CFA not about what it takes to max out each event. I thought each category was 100 points so max score would be 600. My son came close to maxing out everything but pull ups and basketball throw and scored close to 600.

But I found this from a prior thread:

"son took the CFA Last yr at SLE. On June 8th he received the following email:

Candidate xxxxx, your Summer Leaders Seminar Candidate Fitness Assessment Results are as follows: (asteriks indicates event that is at risk)

How did this score end up 72 points above 600?

Just wondering if anyone knows how they come up with the actual number and what a perfect score would be? At what score level even though you passed the CFA is it worth it to try and do it again?

Hello x10,

The details on the CFA scoring is actually kept confidential, however, everyone and their brother has their own assumptions on what goes on behind the scene.

I took the CFA last sunday at SLE as well and was also really confused when a squadron member got a score over 600. It turns out that the other two categories (academics and leadership) are scored out of 800, I feel as if its reasonably safe to assume the athleticism category is also scored out of 800.

As for why each of the six events is out of 100, yet the max score is (maybe) 800 I am assuming that the CFA follows a similar scoring pattern as the actual fitness assessment cadets take at West Point. A current cadet explained to me that a perfect score on this assessment is only an A minus in the grade books. The cadre said it is possible obtain a "critical score" with superior performance and earn an A or an A plus.

Again these are just assumptions and things I heard at SLE from other candidates and cadets. I hope this helps!

  • If you received a "NO Risk" score, then there is very little to be gained by retaking the CFA. The CFA accounts for only 10% of the WCS. If you are already performing at a high level, the small number of CFA points available to get will translate to a negligible number of WCS points. Time would be better spent trying to pick up WCS points in another area that is weighted more heavily - like test scores.
  • If you took CFA at SLE, you get a freebie. You can retake CFA if you want. Otherwise CFA can not be retaken without RC approval. Unlike other SA's, USMA normally gives you one shot at CFA.

Does anyone know the minimum total score to move from at risk to no risk?
Only admissions knows. If you are concerned, talk to your RC and maybe he/she will give you some helpful info.

Actually you can take the CFA as many times as you would like it is just that you have to delete your score.

Only if that is a recent change for classes 2021+. For class of 2020 you got one shot at it unless first was taken at SLE or RC approved retake.

If I have learned anything form being the class of 2021, there are many rules that have changed every year so don't assume rules are still the same because they might not be. Like the packing list is completely different on what you can and cannot bring. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same for the CFA .

Do you know whether the CFA policy regarding number of attempts has changed?

They told us at SLE you can take it as many times as you'd like...you can only submit one, though. If I'm not mistaken. So like, if you get an official one done but dont like the scores, you dont have to submit it. I think you can submit multiple, too but it will probably be a lot of paperwork or something of the likes.

Col. Lee said that you can upload as many as you like but once you do that that is the score in the system so you want to keep paper records to input it again if you score higher.

Colonel Lee stated that if you're at "NO RISK" you should not take another CFA, you're just fine!
