after the first day of your sophomore year ON your scholarship, you automatically contract if I'm not mistaken. Right @AROTC-dad ?

Assuming you pass the APFT, you will be able to contract.

If I understand you correctly, you are being offered an "enhancement" of turning your 3 year AD to a 3.5 year AD scholarship. If so, you can contract earlier so long as you meet all eligiblity standards including DodMERB and the APFT (not the PFT).
Congratulations! This is what my DS achieved in his freshman MS-I year.

Thanks! I was elated when learned USMA had offered it to me.
Technically it's the university offering to cover a significant portion (roughly 75% or $29,000) of my tuition for being in the ROTC program with a 3 Year AD scholarship. To clarify, I was wondering if I would get to contract my freshman year because of that money; I can't imagine they'd let me just take the money no strings attached. There is still the possibility that the university wouldn't see a dime of my 3 Year AD scholarship if I just chose not to fulfill my ROTC obligations

Ask your ROO about what the possibilities are for contracting early. I doubt they will allow this, but it is worth a try. The whole point of an Advanced Designee scholarship is so that the Army can "try before they buy." They want to ensure that you will stick it out for the full year and justify their 3 year scholarship. It is possible still that your Battalion could upgrade you to a 3.5 or 4 year award if you bust your butt right out of the gate this Fall.

Congrats though.
If the university is willing to cover 75% of tuition - you may want to do some number crunching and have the Army pay for room and board instead (all depends on which becomes cheaper to have paid).

My DD's school also does something like this for cadets that get a 3 year AD. Not to this significant of an amount, however, they did give her a Room and Board waiver (about 13,000) even before she contracted. I think their purpose for doing that is to attract the 3 year AD winners to choose their school. If it is from the school and not from ROTC it most likely will not effect when you contract. I am sure the university is taking the gamble, because a contract would activate your scholarship from the Army and that isn't happening. Even with a contract you can still walk away before the first day of your sophomore year. So a contracted freshman does not guarantee the university or the Army anything. I would definitely ask your ROO.
