I know that you all get this alot. I'am a sophmore in High School, and want to know if I have good stats to get into the Academy. I study every single day and I work as hard as I can. I have gotten a 4.0 all year in my sophmore year. I have a really good work ethic. I'am very athletic and I lift about 3 times a week because I have a football lifting class. I know it depends on different stuff and the people that apply but a rough estimate.
Academic: I have a 3.904 GPA unweighted (Seems low cause it seems like everyone has a 4.0 on this site.)
Lettered in Academics
Junior Year I'am taking all AP and Honor classes including 3 science classes and AP computer Science
Still Need to take my ACT but I'am studying all the time for it.
Sports:
Football every year (Lettered)
Track 2 years
Clubs:
Peer Leadership Team (Requires alot of recemendations from teachers)
National Honor Society
Alot of Service which is one of the things that I love to do.
Any Tips would Help. Again I know you get this alot but I'am trying to get a good jump on things because I have been thinking of going to the Academy for a long time. Thanks for your time.

Drew You seem to be on a good start. I am a sophomore as well but I live in PA. Now what I would do if I were you is, volunteer possibly at a hospital near you. Get community service time and also move up show them that you can be a trainer as well as a chair person. Lifting is good, sports are good, but you seem to be lacking in an outside source besides school. I am in a program called Civil Air Patrol, It is an Air Force Aux. Program. Plan for boys state, join some clubs, and be a leader in you school, Try to join student council if you have it. That is the best I can tell you, besides that good luck and I hope to see you in 2 years.

Those two organizations im in have alot of service with them. Almost everyday, also I know what civil air patrol is. I was thinking about joining it but I dont know yet. I have already contacted the leader of a squad near me. But I am just not certain yet. Hope to see you soon man

I'm not gonna lie to you, freshman and sophomore years are like: eh. Everyone has a 4.0 GPA. Until you start actually taking all those (hard) AP and (hard) Honor classes that you plan on taking, you never really know where you really stand. For example, I've seen people struggle with their AP classes last year. They thought they could chew more than they could swallow and ended up getting "average" grades which dropped their GPAs to the low-mids 3s. Which isn't bad at all, but when you'll be competing with people in the 3.8-4.0+s towards the beginning/middle of their senior year, you start to really question yourself.

My advice is, if you truly think you can handle those classes, the community service, and the sports, go for them. If not, there is no shame on bringing that AP Calc down to a Honors Calc. In some cases, like mine where my school is really really competitive, Honors Calc is equivalent to a good university's Calculus 1 class. I did it because I knew that with everything else on my plate, it was going to be hard.

Most definitely, This is my dream and has been for many years, you are starting at a good time as well. Most people wait till their Junior years and that is when it is really tuff. Like me I have been wanting to do this for about 15 years, I was two years old when I said that I wanted to grow up and eat taco's in a plane lol. But man good luck, plan for the best and the rest will come. Get to know your ALO if you don't already know who it is, contact the academy, and contact your congressman and Sent, as well as VP. Class rank is a good thing to have but trust me, you have a decent gpa. and 3.92 is not bad, Make sure you are prepared for the ACT and SAT, take them both Take the SAT in November next year. Take a few classes that will help you with the test, and just pray if it is gods will for you to be there you will be there. I think I am on my way to go, everything seems to be going just right:D But Mate I truly hope you the best, and we could possibly become friends, and go through B.C.T together:D. Anyway talk with Christ Cop, or PackerMatt those guys helped me out with most of my information.

I think I can do it. I have talked to people who are taking AP classes. And then are as smart as Iam and are getting A's. I'am very determined to go there. I just have a question. Mathew how are you a sophmore when you are 17? But anyway I think I can bump my GPA with a weighted one to get my class rank up to the top 3 or 4%. The Academy is looking for a "Whole" person and Teachers and Coaches say I'am that. But good luck to you Matt

I am 17 because when I was in first grade I struggled, my second year of first grade was my determination, I worked hard, I studied, and I always asked for help. My classes that I am taking are very hard, but believe it or not I am doing better than my #1 who is a the type who doesn't have to study. I have a 4.2 GPA, taking all honors or Advanced courses, but believe it or not, it is an attitude, you should know deep down if you belong at the academy, envision yourself at the academy, once you see yourself there trust me it is all up hill. I have seen myself and now I am working so hard, because I am one out of 629,000 in my district who will possibly be going just trust yourself, now Drew do what I am doing, once I established my dream, I started to just think about the academy, remember you still need to finish your sophomore year, once that is done, your summer is going to be oh so hard trust me. Mine is going to be a killer. By mid next year I will be posting if I got accepted into the summer seminar or not, Teachers and Coaches can tell you that you have what it takes, but the answer lies in yourself not others :), if it was not for wisdom then I would not even decide to attend the academy, I just wanted to go to ASU and when I saw my qualities I reach more with just a little more hard work.

I'am determind, I never ever got 4.0's before my sophmore year because I started to take school more seriously. I used to get about 3.7's or 3.8's. And it feels great that I can get my cummlitive to a 3.9. But anyway I can't see myself going anywhre else and the next big step is the Summer Seminar. I'am more focused then I have ever been and I'am going to build on it. But good luck to you and hopefully we stay in touch.

Can someone please tell me what my chances would be?

To be honest with you Drew, no one can tell you what your chances are. The academy will make their decision on account of a whole person quality, if you have that then they will chose you. Best thing to do is just fill out the forums and once you have done that, wait, that is what we can only tell you. For myself I wanted someone to tell me my chances and they can't because yes you have the qualities but they don't know you, the academy will see your qualifications they will also interview with you and your ALO if you have what they want then your going, that is the best I can tell you good luck.

I can be a prime example of HOW this is not true for me. I actually had a 3.52 GPA adjusted to a 3.62 on the website. So I don't think you need to stress out too much about your GPA. Just try to maintain it and keep it as high as you can while taking enough honors/AP classes. AND don't slack off on your ACT/SATs.

Exactly. A GPA is just a small window to who you are as a student. For example, a friend of mine got ranked 11th in our class of about 300 (a few ranks lower than me) and he wasn't very good at math, took some basic classes like baking class, no AP english, only AP was APES, and no Physics his senior year. In math, he was pretty good but never got the grades high enough to get into Mu Alpha Theta. He has the minimum community service required to graduate. Played soccer, track all four years, varsity but not outstanding. Sure, the GPA is really high (4.09 i think) but there's really no basis for Air Force success. No substance for what makes a good candidate. (didn't apply, but just using him as an example) If your GPA is good (as opposed to great), but your history shows that you have put substance into your record, then you are sure to stand out.

Well that is good then. Like I have taken physics and all my classes actually apply to the Air Force. Like the electives I took were actually challenging. And I'am taking AP and honors next year. I can't wait to build on my GPA with some more solid classes. And ofcourse studying for my ACT. My goal is atleast a 32

Wierd, I was failing at academics freshman and first half of sophmore year. I had a 3.0 gpa during freshman year. Now I'm a junior and I am taking almost all AP and honors with 3.8 this semester.

btw how you can handle these AP classes is determined by your perseverance and will. If you are determined you will definitely succeed (and Ive learned that from experience). AP Calculus is relatively easy, I wish it was harder so I could have prioritized it more and got a better grade (I have a B ). anyways like I said, if you're determined there's no way you can't get an A in that class. good luck to you

Thank you, I'am very determind. I can't see myself going anywhere else. If I can keep my grades up. Get a good ACT and play sports and do service. I really think I have a great shot to go to the Academy. This is my life goal.

Drew; the whole "What are my chances" questions are just too difficult to answer. Let me just say; and it will probably be asked again many times; that if you are taking the most difficult classes that your school offers, and you have higher than a 3.65 unweighted GPA, and you have higher than a 27 ACT and/or 1900 SAT, and you've played/lettered in varsity sports, volunteer time, leadership positions, and are physically fit; then you have a very good chance.

But here is the problem with your "Chances". MOST TIMES; you aren't competing against others in a different state or part of the country. Most times, you are competing against others in your district and in your state. Remember 2 things: You HAVE to have a nomination in order to get to the military academies and the person nominating you is only allowed so many nominees at the academy. So let me put in a scenario that is a little discouraging but accurate.

You have a 3.9 gpa, IB/AP classes, 1950 SAT 29 ACT, bla bla bla. Another applicant from a different state has a 3.75 gpa, mostly AP classes, 1900 SAT 28 ACT, bla bla bla. He/She gets an appointment to the academy and you don't. WHY? Because He/she was the highest applicant of those applying in her district/state and go the number 1 nominee slot from their rep/senator. You were #3 of those competing in your district/state and your rep/senator only had 1 available slot.

Then you have to realize that there are numerous categories for nominations; there are a lot applicants who will apply to many other top name schools, etc... So, some might think that an applicant from Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, etc... has a better chance than someone in New York, Virginia, Florida, Texas, etc... Because the later states have many more applicants. Well, there's too many apples and oranges here and they can't be compared. Basically, most congressional districts in a state has roughly the same amount of people. So your competition is from the same area. So your congressman/woman knows who you are from any local newspaper articles, sports, etc... Whereby the rural states might only have 1 representative e.g. Wyoming for the entire state. It's a big state and the rep doesn't know you from adam. But they know the person from their home town more than you. On the other hand, those apply from rural states also only apply to their state University and some similar. So if they get the academy appointment, they are more likely to accept it. Where as in the larger states that also has many large and prestigious colleges like UCLA, USC, Stanford, etc... or NYU, Cornell, Princeton, etc...; many academy applicants there who receive an appointment may also have received acceptance to one of the other local prestigious schools and the academy was a backup. Therefor you might have a better chance in a larger city/state area. Also, there are a lot of districts in the united states that aren't very PRO-MILITARY. Even though they have hundreds of thousands of residents, they could literally have ZERO applicants. And that is common. Trust me; there are representatives in the congress that don't have their maximum alloted constituents at the Air Force Academy. Therefor getting accepted is much easier there than from even a rural school.

The point of my long winded post is that you can't ask "What are my chances" and expect a "REAL" answer. The answer doesn't exist. Only if you ask the question to your congressman/woman, senator, or local ALO who has mentored many LOCAL applicants through the process. None of us know who your competition is. If you had those stats in my state last year (Class of 2012); I would say you were probably a shoe in. Why? Because only one student had a close to perfect application with gpa, class rank, sat/act, bla bla bla. But he received a presidential nomination, so that took him out of the competition from the rest of the applicants. Also, the other 4.0 gpa student had a medical situation that the air force wouldn't waiver. So your odds would have been kick but. The ALO in this area had 4 applicants and 3 made it to the air force academy. The 4th accepted Navy. However, this year, I'm not sure if your stats would have been enough. This year, the ALO for this area didn't have 1 applicant accepted to the air force academy. State wide there were less. Why? Because our 1 representative and 2 senators; just like every other one in the country; is only allowed so many slots. Ours are pretty full.

So the only real guarantees in the process, and even those aren't 100%, is that if you're gpa for ALL of high school is a 4.0 UNWEIGHTED; You ARE #1 ranked in your class; you've take EVERY difficult class that your school offers; you have a 30+ ACT/1900+ SAT; you are a 3 year varsity letter athlete; you have numerous leadership positions like boy/girl's state, class officer, etc...; you do hundreds of hours of volunteer time; and other extra-curricular activities; and have your application 100% COMPLETED by 1 August; then I would say that you will most likely have a 98% shot of being the #1 nominee in your district/state and therefor almost guaranteed to receive a LOA and receiving an appointment. ANYTHING SHY of this and there's way too many variables. Your district/state isn't our district/state. Your classes aren't our classes. You aren't competing against applicants around the country. Too many variables. Best of luck. Mike....

Sure the answer exists! He has a 52.4859% CHANCE! then again, that's my own wierd math. :)

Oh I know what you mean. I did not know it worked that way. I think I'am going to get in touch with my congressman soon. I'am just going to take the hardest classes I can and try to get A's from there. Also stay in shape for my CFA. I'm trying to get my 3.9 to about a 3.95 unweighted. That will make me more competitive
