Hi all!

I just joined as my son is interested in USNA. He's currently at NASS and I've been reading all the NASS threads here. [emoji4]

We're a homeschooling family, so I'll be looking for those threads and tips for that next. [emoji16]

I'm excited to join you all for this journey!

Welcome aboard. Hope your son's dreams come true. Don't forget NROTC as a back up plan. Does he want Navy or Marine?

Didn't you ever here that song, "Mamas, don't let you babies grow up to be Midshipmen"? Welcome aboard, but: Go Army! Beat Navy!

I'm so sorry, I didn't know anyone responded to me. I'm still getting the hang of this. [emoji16]

He wants Navy. He went to NASS thinking his dream was cyber .... came home saying 1) SEALs, 2) SWO, and 3) Cyber. [emoji6]

Yes, so far he'd like to apply for NROTC at UW- Madison, Purdue, UNC- Chapel Hill, and .... I'm blanking in the other two. Maybe Texas A&M was one?

Also, we're having him apply to some non-ROTC, small private schools as plan C.

Make sure some safety NROTC Schools are on the list

Thanks! Will talk to ds about that. I know those first three are very competitive! :)

Yes, the fourth was Texas A&M and the fifth was Marquette University. I think those two could be considered safeties? (66% and 74% acceptance rates?) If not, I'll have ds take a look at some more schools. I don't think he's started on the NROTC app yet.

Acceptance rate alone is not good enough to judge by. How does DS compare to freshman profile?

My DD was gung ho Navy for 3 years from the day she stepped onto the grounds of Annapolis. Then she went to SLE at West Point and that was the end of that!
Class of [emoji638] [emoji646] [emoji638] [emoji637] Go Army Beat Navy!

All in good fun...
Best of luck to your DS! They are all fighting for the same cause!!!

I think he's competitive. His ACT/SAT scores are above TAMU and Marquette's 75 percentile scores. Is this what you meant?

Well partially. I'm sure there are other factors included in their acceptance decisions. Just be sure to apply to a college with NROTC that is a shoe-in. It doesn't have to be on the list of five. If he doesn't get accepted to hiss list of five he would at least have a school he could try to transfer the scholarship to. There is always someone each year who wins a scholarship but doesn't get accepted to their list of five colleges and can't use the scholarship.

Is your DS also looking at any of the SMC's? Some good options there to meet his goal of going Navy, but SMC's are definitely not for everyone. SEAL is a tough route and some of the SMC's can be a good option to provide the type of preparation needed.

Good luck to your DS.

I don't think we've looked at them much. Just googled and will check them out! We have TAMU on the list, but haven't looked at the others.

Definitely check out the SMC's. They started out as plan B to West Point for DS but after and open house at VMI, WP was pushed to 2nd choice.

I am a long ago graduate of Texas A&M for undergrad and UW Madison for graduate school. Now in Madison for 20 years. both great choices
