Anybody ever Uber from EWR (Newark) to USMA?

Our cadet has done it many times. What is the question?

I've seen so many posts about avoiding car rental for Rday. Honestly, have you been to West Point? The post is very big. You cannot comfortably walk it. If you are going to be there for 3-4 days, you will spend more on taxis than you will for the car rental. There are tons of coupon codes out there, including deals from business, costco, etc...rent the car. NY/NJ is not all like Manhattan. The drove from EWR is not bad. Traffic will depend on weather and time of day, but really, you will want a car. I am not a brave driver...but I totally rent the car. Be bold!

Agree. West Point is hilly and R-Day will inevitably be hot, humid, and probably rainy. Bring a GPS or rent a car with one--it's a doable drive. I don't know where your hotel is but if it's not the Thayer or IHG on post that will only add to your hike . No sense in dragging your CC on a hike all over post when he/she is getting ready for 6 weeks of marching and running.

I've been to the post several times and we are staying at Thayer. Once there we can ride share when needed. I just wanted to know if anyone has used uber from EWR.

Be advised you can get to West Point via Uber/Lyft, but you can't be picked up there as there is currently no ridesshare available in NY outside NYC.

If you really want to avoid renting a care and are staying at Thayer, you could take the train from Newark to Grand Central then transfer to the train that runs up the river. There is a stop across the river in Garrison. Someone closer might be able to tell you cab fare from there to Thayer but it cannot be more than $20-30. The train is also pretty reasonable.

Unfortunately cab from Garrison is hit or miss. One reason I wish NY would permit Uber/Lyft.
There is a ferry that runs Fri-Sun and drops you at the bottoms of the hill from Thayer, but you need a military ID to ride it. Look under West Point Harborcraft on FB.

If you get off at Peekskill instead of Garrison, there are cabs waiting.

We rented a car every time we came to visit and it was absolutely worth it. I walk a lot for work and am very active, but on post at WP will humble you, LOL. there are hills and distance to everything you want to see. It was very easy to get to the rental counters at EWR, and we just shot up Garden State Parkway to palisades Parkway and then the little run over to Ft Montgomery. It costs $3 to get out of New Jersey. LOL.

Kids do it all the time. It's around 125-150.

I spent less on the rental cars. We visited twice this past academic year and I got some rates around $22 for a midsize. Even after fees, it was still a better deal.

As of a few days ago Uber and Lyft are available in NY outside the city. May take a while to be widespread.

tell me which website has cheap air tickets?
Do a search using something like Kayak. Then check individual airline sites.
SouthWest you need to check their site.
Check cancelation polices. Upper classmen at USMA were often told at the last minute last week that they had to stay for Parent/Plebe weekend. Puts them in a tough position- loose $ for canceling travel plans or get hours.

The best part about Southwest, besides no bag fees (1st 2 bags checked are free) is their policy if you miss a flight. The money you spent on the flight goes as a credit in your 'account' with them to be used toward other travel within 12 months. Their rewards add up quickly, and I believe they have military rates (have to call to purchase tickets vs online).

My kids just told me that if you check for airfare ... they store the data so when you check later the prices go up a little. But if you check from a different device OR clear your cache - prices don’t go higher.

Doesn’t surprise me if true.

I have heard that as well.
