So me and my family are on our way to the Academy as I write this. But I've started to feel the symptoms of a cold coming on. Sore mouth, aching joints, and general tired feeling. What can I expect, if I arrive at IDay with a cold.

When you check in - you feel fine. You will be issued Tylenol/Aspirin along with all your other items.

Don't risk being turned away because you are ill on IDay. Possibly go to Urgent Care especially if you have a high fever, but otherwise...

This is the time to just suck it up. .

No doubt others will disagree. Drink pretty of fluids, get as much rest as possible.

USNA has the Plebe Hack that virtually everyone will get over the summer. I don't recall everyone getting sick at USAFA (though a few years ago some terrible stomach bug went through all the BCT Squadrons almost shutting down BCT), but if your symptoms persist go to Sick Call on Day 3 or 4.

Not the best way to start, but you can battle through.

USAFA's version is Jack's Hack and it seems to hit everyone at some point.

It was a long time ago. I just don't remember (or have blocked it out) that everyone gets sick during BCT. Of course BCT was tougher back then as well : )

Are we sure that BCT was ever tough? I remember seeing plebes with golf clubs and air conditioning back when Dinosaurs walked the plain.

What do you mean don't be afraid to be turned away?

I think he means that if you are too ill and therefore unable to participate in BCT you could be risk being rejected on the spot and sent home.

In other words, get tough and fight through a cold. As a military officer you will be expected to do things that are far more difficult.

I second the Vitamin C and zinc. Stop at the drug store and get some Vit C tablets. Take a few tonight and again in the morning. You can't take them in with you but Vitamin C and Zinc too really boost your immune. And get a good night sleep tonight and just power through tomorrow. Best of luck to you.
