Received the following notice from the KP Parents' Assoc. this morning.

Attention Parents: Because the Academy Postal Unit, which is a U.S. Post Office contract operation, has been deemed unprofitable by the USPS, it will be closing on May 15, 2009. However, the Academy Mailroom will continue to provide mailing assistance to midshipmen for purposes of packages, helping to determine correct postage for their items, and providing "priority mail" supplies. They will be able to drop off and pick up packages left by the Postal Service, etc. at the mailroom. The Navy Federal Credit Union, if your mid has an account, can issue bank checks free of charge. The mids can purchase postal needs on line using a credit card at http://www.usps.com/ You could also now include stamps in boodle bags and send them along with your plebe candidates. Thank you for your support and cooperation in this matter.

It was mentioned that USPS will be closing at CGA and other colleges as well.

Yet the rates went up again yesterday....go figure

Leave and pick-up packages, get assistance in mailing, provide Priority Mailing supplies, and figuring out proper postage.

That sounds like everything you want to do at a post office, right?

What are they losing by having them leave?

From what I understand, the only thing they'll lose out on is buying stamps & doing certified letters & such. I feel sure parents will just send a book of stamps here & there if needed. Its not like those Mids write a lot anyhow right?

True, and most postage can be purchased and printed on-line as well.

Well nothings free, and contracted services certainly aren't. USPS is feeling the pressure across the board.

As did fuel prices, all with less people using USPS packages to send mail. Of course, there's also email these days.

We can't pay the Postal Service, but we can afford to to buy car companies...

Maybe the Academy will stop having rashes of mail theft with this change....doubt it though. Seems like once every 5-10 years some mailroom clerk gets busted for stealing our mail.
