i am buying my supplies for MMI this Fall. I received a packing list from MMI but it was just stuff like "white tshirts" or "small lamp optional". So I have some logistical questions for anyone who would know:

1. How does laundry work? The packing list said bring quarters and laundry supplies, but do we need a laundry basket?
2. Are we allowed to keep a photo frame in our rooms?
3. Can we bring a sleeping bag?
4. Are we allowed to have big boxes to store our belongings?
5. Is a Macbook allowed as our school computer?

Thanks

My DS is going to MMI this year and I have spoken with admissions numerous times. They're very helpful and available. I've always had someone answer the phone and my questions during business hours.

My DS went to MMI, here's what I remember:
1. I think he used a laundry bag. (takes up less space)
2. Don't remember if he had one on his desk, but you can store it in the desk drawer.
3. He had a blanket that he folded up.
4. Him and his roommate shared space under the bottom bunk. They had plastic storage containers and he had a foot locker.
5. Not sure.

Good luck.

A Macbook will be fine. Most classes use browser based homework and class software, which is platform independent.

Thank you, KP2020Dad. The reason I was asking about the container was because it seems like I will have a lot of supplies to bring, and a container sounds like a good option. However, it doesn't seem possible that a storage container (like the big 40quart plastic ones from Walmart) could fit under the bed - I understand that a foot locker could. Would you mind clarifying if we would be able to store the containers in our rooms?

As of two years ago, the "containers" could be stored in the room, under the bunks, as long as they fit. There is a Family Dollar/Dollar General? in Marion. I think that's were we got the containers. There is also a Walmart in Selma (about 40 min away). Good luck.

We asked about the computer issue too. We are a Mac household and all of our laptops are "of a certain age" (the newest one is 7 years old). We were sent a pdf of the requirements for both Mac and Windows-based computers. None of our computers came even close to meeting minimum standards; needless to say, we have purchased a new laptop for our DS. We bought him a Dell for two reasons: 1) it was on sale at Sam's Club and 2) based on USMA forum threads, that's likely what he will be using at West Point. So we figured he'd have a year to get used to a Windows operating system. I think he is going to bring the older Mac too just in case his learning curve goes sideways right before a big assignment is due, though. Here's the document we were sent:

DD also attending Marion and we got clear plastic bins that have wheels on the bottom from Dollar General so they can be pushed under the bunks easily. In addition to extra blanket she is also bringing an Eno style hammock (on advice of local WP cadet who uses one at USMA)...the things they will do to get out of making that bed everyday!

Thank you Teragram. I was just planning to bring two extra blankets and a pillow to sleep on top of my inspection bed haha. You are correct... the things we will do to get out of making our beds!

Are we allowed to have our phones during the first month, or is it like BCT where we will need to write letters home?

How does it work with the ENO hammock? @Teragram

Dropped off DD yesterday and they did not take her phone but did not hear from her until late last night when she got back to her barracks and was showered getting ready for bed. I assume from the information we got from cadre that you cannot carry your phones around but you do not have to hand them in. If I get more information from her I will post here :)

For SMI's (Saturday morning inspections) the cadet's will make their beds to specs and then use hammock, cot or exercise mat to sleep somewhere other than bed so they do not get messed up. Per DD's company cadre yesterday they do not worry so much about everyday inspections so they sleep on top of the bedding and just straighten it each morning. Hope that helps, will share more info as she shares with me over next few days!
