Hello!

I plan on applying to the academy in a few years (current sophomore) and I was wondering if anybody who has gotten an appointment to the academy would mind sharing their resume or what some of the main things highlighted on their resumes were.

Thanks!

I was Wait Listed last year and have raised my math ACT score up 5 points after I was Wait Listed. So hopefully I will receive my appointment and be able to share my resume on here around January to April. Good Luck!

Good luck!!
That would be terrific if you could share it then!

Thanks :)

What was your math ACT score? I am currently at a 27 in math

I had a 29 English 27 Math and was Wait Listed. I now have a 29 English and 32 Math. I also come from a very competitive district in Florida (we have an Air Force and Navy base in the same city) and I didnt receive a congressional nomination because of this (very competitive district so I only had presidential). I think being able to say I was Wait Listed and have improved my test scores since then will help me receive the nominations I need.

I have a 34 in english so I hope that will balance out my math. Did you receive a nom last year or no?

I did not receive a congressional nomination because my district is very competitive. I went on a Presidential nomination.

There isn't a lot of value in trying to compare resumes since none of us work in admissions to know the exact formula currently being used. Many different combinations of ECA's, academic achievement, athletics, leadership, etc. can lead to an appointment. In addition, there are parts of your application we will never see (i.e. teacher recommendations, BGO input, MOC interviews....etc.). USNA's website shows the typical profile of those accepted and that is probably as good as anything else you might find. There are also several older threads on this topic.

Thanks for the advice. I'll go look at some older threads and the navy's stats.

Glad you are preparing. Don't have to agree, but from speaking to son's USNA buddies, I've noticed you mostly need,
1. High SAT/ACT 2.Top class rank 3. Great grades, 4. 3+ AP classes 5. good recommendations and 6. Play a sport.

Take all the AP/IB/honors classes you can handle. USNA knows how many high-track courses your h.s. offers and expects you to be taking those that are relevant to your schedule. Obviously, if your school doesn't offer any/many, that is what it is and USNA knows this.

Teacher recs are also very important. Your teachers typically have worked closely with you for a full year or more. What they think -- and say -- counts a lot! A lot more than the BGO rec, truth be told.

In terms of activities, do what interests you. There are no "right/wrong" activities, so do things you enjoy and are happy to lead.

You need to be careful. When you say "the academy", people might think you are referring to "THE Academy", which of course would be West Point. If you are referring to USNA, you should say, "that other academy".

GO ARMY! BEAT Navy!

GO ARMY! BEAT Navy!

brovol, 50 / 50 odds of getting that right and yet........better luck next time though. Correct Phrasing is GO NAVY! BEAT Army! :groupwave:

Another question that just came to mind: Is there any information on the way points are assigned for specific things? For example is being in band x points but being a club leader is y and being in varsity sports is z?
Thanks again for the great responses!

USNA has never published their WCS formula. You will find other threads on here that refer to that RAND study about WP from several years ago. We have no way to know what the current formula is and you can't assume what WP does will be the same at USNA. You can also find older threads where an applicant got an appointment to one SA, but a TWE from another, so that would tend to indicate the formulas are NOT the same at each SA.

Yes, you do get certain points for certain activities, grades, recs, etc. However, no one here, including BGOs, can tell you how many points are attributed to each element or how many points you need. Also, the formula for WCS can change from year to year, even at the same SA. So what made for a successful candidate in 2010 may not work in 2015 or 2020.

Thank you. That sheds a lot of light on things. I really appreciate the input from everyone. You guys are the best [emoji4]
