I'm a contracted MSI cadet and I definitely want to attend a school/training/etc this summer, especially one that would boost my OML score. How soon should/can I start any of the application process? I've heard a large factor is just getting everything in on time so I definitely want to start as soon as I can.

Also, can anyone tell me how competitive it is to get into programs such as CULP as an MSI? My APFT score is only 220 but I am confident I will have a 3.7-4.0 GPA at the end of the semester. Is this good enough? What else do they consider?

Thanks so much.

If you're interested in CULP then you should talk to your cadre soon, I can't remember the exact deadline date for the CULP application but I know it's early in the semester.

As far as training schools such as Airborne and Air Assault, I don't believe there is an official application process. At my son's school they received a certain number of slots, if any, and the cadre offered them to certain cadets. I would always make sure you let your cadre know that you are interested in any opportunities that may come up.

Thank you.

I'd recommend that you work on boosting that APFT to be competitive for the summer programs. 220 is a pass but there will likely be much higher scores (250 to 290) from MS-II's that will be ahead of you.
Keep up the good grades, too!

DS told me applications for CULP open on the 15th of this month. He is also an MS1 planning to apply.

You may also wish to check out Project GO. It is open to both contracted and not yet contracted cadets of all levels. I believe the application process opens up sometime early to mid-October with applications due by Dec/Jan. Here is the website. http://www.rotcprojectgo.org/

What level of language competence does that require? Or are those marked first semester beginner level? This is a little different it seems than CULP... more language learning focused, correct?

Depends on the language program and school, I would just go to the link provided above and look through the options and it will tell you if you need to already know the language or not.

Some of the project go programs are for absolute beginners although from past experience if the cadet has an opportunity to take at least 1 semester of the target language that helps to show interest. The applications for 2018 aren't live yet but a perusal of last year's information gives you a sense of what is on offer. From past experience it is best to apply to more than one program and don't apply for program geared strictly for advanced levels unless of course the cadet is at an advanced level. The program, whilst focused on critical language skills also provides opportunities for intercultural skill development as well. Also if you happen to be fortunate enough to go to one of the host schools that seems to increase the likelihood of being selected although some more than others. Hope that helps
