Handgun accidentally discharged in Texas A&M dorm room

Authorities say owner had license to carry, but another cadet was holding weapon

Texas A&M University Police confirmed Wednesday a student accidentally discharged a firearm in a dorm room earlier this month.

This is the first incident of an accidental discharge at A&M since the carry of firearms was allowed in public universities statewide just over a year ago.

According to UPD spokesman Lt. Bobby Richardson, the incident occurred around 8 p.m. Sept. 1 in one of the Corps of Cadets dormitories. He said an investigation into the incident found a member of the Corps who is a licensed concealed carry holder was letting another student hold his firearm -- a Glock pistol -- in the dorm when the non-owner accidentally discharged the gun.

After traveling through the wall into another dorm room -- which was unoccupied at the time -- Richardson said the bullet was found lodged in a bed frame.

The two students reported the incident to Corps leadership, who alerted University Police, Richardson said.

Police declined to release the name of the dorm or the students involved and could not confirm if the second student who discharged the weapon also was a member of the Corps.

Richardson said the students reported they thought the gun was not loaded. The incident has been ruled an accident, and no criminal action will be taken. Richardson said UPD does not have authority over student conduct and could not comment on if any disciplinary action was taken.

University administrators said they have no comment on the situation at this time.

A similar incident was reported at Tarleton State University -- a Texas A&M University System school -- last September, in which a concealed handgun license holder accidentally discharged the firearm in a co-ed dormitory on the campus in Stephenville, according to The Texas Tribune. No one was harmed, and a university spokesperson said there was "minimal property damage."

Senate Bill 11, passed by the Texas Legislature in May 2015, allowed concealed firearms to be carried in campus residential facilities, classrooms and faculty and staff offices of public universities across the state beginning Aug. 1 2016, and followed by community colleges Aug. 1, 2017.

Last month, community colleges across the state -- including Blinn College -- were required to implement the new rules. Although Blinn officials said they did not use A&M's exact rules, the college did use the university as a resource while crafting its own guidelines in an effort to accommodate students who are co-enrolled in the two schools.

Time to learn a weapon is always loaded! Even when it isn't.

One of the first things taught in a hunter safety course, and something my dad taught me from very young...treat all guns as if they are loaded; never point a gun at someone or something unless you intend to kill them. Period.

I am concerned the same thing will happen at The Citadel. Last year Cadets bombarded then Governor Niki Haley to pressure the College Administration to change its' policy against Cadets storing firearms in their vehicles parked on campus. So....the Governor used her leverage....and now there are cars with weapons in them available 24/7. Won't be long before (a) cars are targets for break ins so thieves can steal weapons and/or (b) some knuckle head shoots his big toe off.

This post and replies are great in making people think about risk. Is it worth it to have that gun at school? You really have to think about the benefits, risk, possibilities and consequences.
