Active Shooter False Alarm at USAFA Last Night

... it was the whole school...

You are correct, the entire facility was on lockdown. We were texting with DS who is current cadet during the event. It went on for a little over three hours. It was interesting how much false information was circulating on Facebook and the like.

I am definitely interested in hearing the post incident analysis and cause of the initial alert.

I am as well. One would have to speculate that there is a connection with this week's recent event. I can't recall any active shooter jobs at USAFA in the last 4-5 years; plenty of training for it though. It is a facility secured by military personnel armed with automatic weapons, has a separate inner perimeter and vehicle inspections upon entry...probably one of the "hardest target" college/universities in US.

Crazy night. Between my two cadets in separate locations last night and different friends and perspectives and different class pages etc the info was all over the place. I too am interested in the final report.

My wife was freaking out about this but that's what hormones do I guess.:p I tried my best to calm her down by telling her that a SA is the last place that any psychopath would want to go on a shooting rampage. Anything can happen but our security forces are very well equipped and trained for these sort of scenarios. It'd be interesting to know what really happened for sure. Back to the beatings, boys 'n girls!

I wonder if the false alarm had anything to do with the Supe's smackdown on the racists on campus.

Hearing that it started from some misinformation which spread rapidly thru social media morphing like the old game of "telephone" at super-speed.

The Denver Post seems to be going with: Social media fuels “hysteria” at Air Force Academy after Nerf gun battle is reported as shots fired. That is consistent with one rumor I had heard. However, I still can't believe that a "Nerf gun battle" can get twisted into "active shooter" situation. During the event there was also a lot of misinformation on the El Paso County Sheriff's live police radio stream which was available on the web.

Still waiting for something official from USAFA which will hopefully provide ways to avoid such hysteria and misinformation in the future.

Remember that initial news reports [including social media] are almost always incorrect or incomplete in any 'breaking news' crisis.
Stay calm and don't feed fuel to the fire in these instances; zero benefit from reposting or commenting on info that is almost certain to be at least partially incorrect.

Long time lurker with a C/C at the prep school - I'm hearing it was, in fact, a Nerf Gun battle at the P, starting late into the evening (low light outside) that was reported (falsely) as an active shooter. Social media/instant communications picked up the ball and ran with it. The lockdown and campus-wide sweep was certainly real, and awfully scary for the cadet wing and C/C's. Unfortunately, law enforcement has to take these reports seriously and respond appropriately, no matter how preposterous it seems after the fact.

@IronDadCO that was the same story I heard. Funny thing was I’m stationed at Peterson and received an “Active Shooter Termination” text message/call for USAFA, but not an initial notification when the active shooter situation was reported. Worried me a bit when I woke up to it...but I’m relieved nothing was amiss.
