SAT failure

O guys this isnt good. I got my May 2nd SAT scores back and its terrible

Verbal-630 (previous of 640):thumbdown:
Math-550 (previous of 580):thumbdown:
Writing-510

My goal going into this was a 600 in math but I did way worse than before. I obviously need to take it again but I will be overseas with a school group for the june 6th test. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I understand the whole person concept but still good scores dont hurt in this process. If I take the next SAT OCT 4th im not sure if it would matter because I think USAFA will have already made most of its choices. BLAST!!!

The good thing is that the academy takes the highest scores. So be positive and keep signing up to take it again. You have nothing to lose. Best of luck. Mike.....
 
All right Kevster take a breath with me. Those scores probably mean no early offer, but not that your dream is over. Prepare over the summer, Take a class with Kaplan or one of the other services. Practice, Practice, Practice....Take the first test in Sept. or Oct I forget.

Potter was all over the map with the SAT took it three times. In the end she had the +600 numbers she needed. You can too.
 
don't worry so much..i know how u feel...my scores were a real big disappoint too

I'm gonna start practicing on my SAT during the summer and these are the recommended books...my friends use this set of books to prep for SAT as well as outside SAT prep (they got into harvard )


Princeton Review: Cracking the SAT 2009
Princeton Review: 11 Practice Tests for SAT and PSATs (2008)
Barron's SAT (Any year is fine)
College Board The Offical SAT Guide

My friends advised me that I do one Princeton Review practice test, then do one college board practice test, then do one Princeton Review practice test, then college board practice test, and etc. The Princeton Review tests are harder and the college board test will seem easier...hope that helps
 
Try taking the ACT as well.

Hmmmm I should look into that. I have never really thought seriously about it. Any people take both tests and have any thoughts on them?

Not true. Like ds52262 said, it will probably mean no early offer, but you can update your application until March 1, if I recall correctly. So do that. Take the SAT as many times as you're able to get the best scores you can. Last year I took it in the beginning of June, didn't do so well, so I took it again in Oct. and got my best scores. You have the whole summer to study and practice, so use that time. The practice tests are a great idea, and I think they helped me a lot. So did getting a good nights sleep beforehand.

Believe me, your journey is far from over. Don't let this one setback discourage you. You've still got plenty of time to do better later, if you take the time to practice now.
 
I hated the SAT, took the ACT 4 times and did way better on it by comparison
 
took SAT once, ACT twice. totally forgot on the SAT that you didn't have to answer everything, but still didn't do too awful i guess. I personally liked the ACT a lot more. No clue why, I just felt more comfortable with it and did a lot better. there's my $.02
 
I took prep for SAT class for an entire summer and a winter. I found that it did not help at all in my opinion. I took the test twice and ended up getting a superscore of 1910. Then I decided to take the ACT. I walked in without prep etc. and got a 27. Took the test one more time and got a 30. The difference between this and the SAT was that for SAT math I got a 630/800, but for ACT math I got 35/36. The only confusing part on ACT is science but I'm sure if you practice enough in that area you will be fine..
 
Seriously, I think the ACT is much easier. Science is just reading graphs and charts... I aced that section. Reading was the difficult part... definitely not enough time to do that section.
 
they will not have made most of their choices. remember, you can always update your file. the last time i took the SAT was january, and i got an appointment in march.

some people may find classes helpful, others may not. i liked the review books with "tricks" in them. but personally, i think they best thing to do for anyone to do exceptionally well on the SAT is taking challenging high school classes. i never took a class, but my scores still went up from junior year to senior year, first semester to second semester.

don't be down on yourself, just get motivated. :thumb:

i got a 35 on reading ;)
easiest section for me
 
I took the ACT and really didn't think I did that much better than the SAT but my admissions counseler said it raised my academic composite by 200 points.

I don't know how good that is, but it was 200 points I wouldn't have had on my file otherwise! So definetely take both.

I agree! Reading is my favorite section, I got a 36 and only 10 minutes or so extra time at the end.

Really though, its best if you can take each test at least once, and afterwards decide which one you like better, and if needed, which one would be easiest for you to improve upon to get a better score.

Practice tests definitely help, but so does a GOOD night's sleep! I did take a class for both the SAT and ACT, but honestly I don't think it helped at all really; getting a good night's rest and the practice tests did help a bit though.

If you hurry, I think you can still register for the June 13 ACT test, $20 extra fee for late registration, but it might be worth it if you think it would help your application. http://www.actstudent.org/

All of these books are tedious and are littered with typos except for the College board one. Just keep studying algebra, and get used to reading long passages
 
I disagree. Both the Princeton Review's "Cracking the SAT" and the College Board's study guide are exceptional, IMO. "Cracking the SAT" has many of the useful "tricks".

for the record.. my daughter took the SAT 3 times and the ACT 4 times... she ha such a test anxiety set up in her head she did worse on some of them then she did on the previous.... she started taking them in April of last year and finished in January and Feb this year... ... there are some good learning aids, but none of them seemed to help her! she will have classes at NMMI this year ... attitude is a good part of it...
