The United States Military Academy is my #1 choice of all colleges. I was a 4 year winner and read that I have to accept the scholarship and decide which school by December 9th. Once I accept this scholarship, am I locked in and must I go through with the process or am I able to back out if I'm accepted to West Point?

DS is also national 4 year for NROTC and has USNA and USMA as top two. On the NROTC portal, and in a fantastic thread under the ROTC forum by OldSalt titled "Accepting your ROTC scholarship," it says that you should accept the offer and you can later inform that you are going to an SA. This is in-line with the repeated advice that you should be pursuing Plans B-Z if your sincere desire is to serve as an officer in the US military. Last, hearty congratulations on a fantastic back-up plan.

Since you can back-out of Rotc at the end of year one (if you have a rotc scholarship), there wouldnt be an issue if you get accepted by an academy and turn down the scholarship before school even starts

When you show up for Rday, your ROTC scholarship is voided. That is, if you haven't already declined. And That's a whole 'nother discussion.

Absolutely accept the scholarship, it will have no effect on your SA applications and you can decline the scholarship at a later date right up to Rday if you get and accept an appointment. You earned this scholarship, accept it.
