Anytime between now and April 15th. Until you complete medical, you can only get an LOA. To receive an appointment you will need to be medically qualified and have a nomination. Most candidates hear between late January and March.

My DD didn't hear until March.
Everyone seems to have different experiences. I got my appointment 10 days after I submitted my application (No LOA). When I submitted, I had medical + a nomination; I just took forever to do my essays (personal data record).
Anyways, judging from my experience, it would seem that the admissions board is very quick in evaluating applications.

Remember there is more than the admissions board. They make a determination that you are Qualified. The Appointment and Noms committee then takes those Qualifed applicants and slates you. As an example; if you have a MOC’s Nom and have completed everything and your MOC used a competitive slate (meaning unranked, let USNA pick the winner). Applications aren’t due until January 31. Well they need everyone’s applications scored before making a determination. Maybe you don’t win your slate and you land in the National Pool and USNA is waiting to see if you fall in the top 150. Most of these folks won’t hear until late in the game in this scenario. There are 100s and 100s of scenarios I could go over. Most hear Jan-March. Be prepared to wait and if you hear sooner, great!

@NavyHoops - Thank you for the message above. DS's file is "complete pending review" and he received notification from BGO this week that his file had been through admissions and he was deemed qualified. He has not yet heard back on nominations. Does qualified mean that you should get a LOA? Just curious if he should be looking for a document or if that matters. Thanks.

No ...Board qualified just means that the Candidate is Admissions Board qualified (ie.academically/activity/leadership), That is one of the Q's in 3Q (others medical and CFA). This is a good, but the big funnel is who gets the Appointment from the MOC Nominations. You should not be expecting any notice ---in fact, the BGO wasn't even supposed to tell you that he was qualified.

There was a hang up with the English Teacher recommendation, but it was finally entered. I feel so much better seeing that application status.
His ACT scores were also added to his SAT scores that were there, which I think will help. Highest SAT was Math-760, verbal-670. ACT math-34, verbal-31.

Hey, sorry. I didn't see this till now. Here's a quick breakdown:
4.2 GPA (9-11 Grade). I go to a relatively competitive school. I took one AP class my sophomore year, 4 AP/honors classes my junior year, and 5 AP/college courses my senior year. The transcript I submitted had a total of 3 Bs out of the six semesters of high school I submitted. We do not rank, but I know that I barely made the cut off for top 10%.
ACT: 35 English, 35 Reading, 32 Science, 29 Math (I ended up retaking and got a 33 math, but I got accepted before that score was in my portal if I remember correctly).
-composite: 33-34 (based on which math score you use)
My essay was very strong. I think that the essay is an incredibly underestimated part of the application. It is the only place where you can show who you really are; other candidates who are competitive are going to have outstanding grades, great scores, and impressive extracurriculars. My essay focused on a failure that totally changed my perspective on leading and my style of leading. It was personal as well.
In addition to my essay, the various leadership opportunities I held were probably impactful in the board's evaluation of me. I've held various positions within my JROTC unit, the main one being the Unit Commander, where I was in charge of close to 200 cadets. I've also been in leadership positions within clubs as well as National Honor Society. Honestly, I probably could have left everything out except my JROTC activities and been fine; I think it's much more impressive when you show a strong concentration on a certain activity and your leadership within it, rather than being the president of totally unrelated, random clubs.
I am confident that my letters of recommendation were very good. I made sure that my teachers got to know me very well, basically to the point where we formed a friendship, and that led to what I am confident were good letters.
