We are a Navy Family. My husband is still AD and a USNA graduate. My oldest is a 3rd Class Mid at South Carolina - go Gamecocks beat Clemson! Our oldest daughter has made it clear to us for years she was not going to join the military. Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets visited her high school yesterday and now she is. Honestly I could tell she was interested in getting more information over the past year. We all agree AFROTC would be her best fit. She will be looking for schools in Texas since we should be PCSing there her senior year. She is wanting information about what what AFROTC is like. Every service is different so any info would be appreciated.

Im a cadet on an AFROTC scholarship at Virginia Tech. I love it. Feel free to pm me with your questions about the VTCC and AFROTC.

Are you a VA resident?. What type scholarship are you on?

My DS son is applying to VA TECH, but is a CA resident with a type 7 scholarship

My son is in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. Son is having a great experience. He has an AFROTC scholarship. The AFROTC Detachment is one of the largest and best. There is a spend the night with the Corps program. I'd recommend having your daughter do that. She'll learn more about A&M and the Corps and determine if it would be a good fit for her.

Oh that’s a great idea! I hadn’t thought of that .

Is texas the only state that offers out of state residents to be eligible for in state tuition?. DS has a type 7 and looking to see what options he has. (Without changing to type 2)

There are many schools that will charge IS for OOS ROTC cadets. There is sticky on this forum. It is multiple pages, and quite old, thus double check if they still do.

Personally, I would contact the schools he is applying to directly. The Bursar or FA office should be able to tell you directly if they charge IS.

I would also say that you should think about going to any school if you need the ROTC scholarship for financial reasons. Many kids will leave, plus if your DS is a tech major, such as engineering and decides they want to switch to a non-tech major they will need to have HQAFROTC to approve the switch. Statistically the chances are slim to none in that scenario.

Virginia Tech also has a spend the night program. We also offer many emerging leadership scholarships as well. In 2015, Virginia Tech AFROTC was ranked the #1 large detachment in the country.

My son has IS tuition at South Carolina in their NROTC program. Not sure if their AFROTC program offers it.
Our family is in an unusual situation in that we are technically residents of Florida (we vote there) we live in Virginia and I pay instate taxes here and in 18 months the Navy will be moving us again. We are hoping for orders back to Texas our daughter’s senior year. If we PCS to Texas we will declare residency there.

Do you think junior year is too early to request a visit?

It depends on how many colleges you plan to visit many kids do that during their spring break.

Make sure you visit the school during the regular session so that your daughter can get an accurate sense of student life - how they balance studies and free time, where and how the students congregate, whether there's a real sense of community/engagement/belonging etc

Absolutely agree with this. My DS and I visited three schools during spring break his junior year. One of these schools was on spring break. It was hard to get a sense of the vibe of the school and no tours were being offered.
