Appointment

has anyone heard ANYTHING at all from coaches/admissions etc on what is going on?

Nothing here. Didn’t seem like to many were notified, maybe some more will come out some time this week or next week. Also, the Facebook group has 15 appointees in it.

What's the Facebook group? Can you only look at it if you were appointed? I'm wondering if the people in the group actually ever had their Bear's Den updated yet or if it was just the call from their coach/AO.

The name of it is U.S. Coast Guard Academy Class of 2022. From what I can tell there are 2 admissions officers in the group and if you request to join they make sure you have an appointment. I haven’t received anything yet so I’m not in the group. But you can see the members and who they are. Currently 17 total in the group.

Bears Den changed. The list of checks disappeared and a new box took its place with link to a letter.

My DS just became the 18th member on the Facebook Group. Bears Den adjusted on the 23rd. He accepted his appointment on-line right before joining the Facebook Group tonight.
Congratulations to your DS mil.mom! Did he "accept" his appointment or did he request the enrollment form online? My DS didn't see an option to accept yet. Only to have the enrollment package sent.

Thanks. And congrats to you too! Yes, you are right. I guess I mis-spoke. So many steps in this process...it's hard to keep it all straight. All I know he is fully "qualified" with DODmerb, has no other outstanding issues, and the letter offers "a full appointment". So no LOA (I think I am correct on that right?) He did complete the enrollment form and my understanding is that the full package will be sent via regular mail right before Christmas.

Right on all accounts. That's what I understand too.

Does anyone know when the next wave of admission offers will be coming out? Is this an every week thing from now until Christmas Eve, every other week, or something different? should we expect coaches to be making phone calls a day or two before the official release again?

Also, I have seen reference to people saying their AO told them X or Y about where their application stood in the pipeline, or that it had already been reviewed. Is it appropriate for applicants to be asking questions like this of their AO? it would seem like a no-no.

Congrats to those got accepted. We are still waiting on my DD. As a side note, what is LOA?

Just to clarify, a letter of assurance (LOA) is a tool used by Admissions early in the process to notify candidates of USCGA's desire to appoint them. Historically, there are around 20-30 LOAs given out in the late August-September time frame. The LOA will contain the requirements to be completed to guarantee the candidate's appointment (such as DoDMERB qualification, etc.). Once those items are completed to the satisfaction of the Review Board, the candidate is offered an appointment. LOAs are used many times for athletes, and other highly qualified candidates, that may be lured elsewhere early in the admissions cycle. The vast majority of appointees will NOT receive an LOA, and LOAs do NOT guarantee an appointment IF the other requirements are not met (unable to receive waiver for DoDMERB disqualification, etc.).

Another important item to remember concerning DoDMERB...the "qualified" status can change if the appointee suffers injury/illness prior to Day One. Every year, there are candidates who suffer injuries and lose their qualified status, and occasionally are not able to secure a waiver in time to keep their appointment. The best advice to appointees who are deemed "qualified" is to seriously consider the pros/cons of certain sports and activities with the consequences of possible injury and loss of appointment.

As I have posted on another thread, there is a Facebook page for parents/guardians of those who have received an APPOINTMENT. Search Facebook for USCGA - Parents - Class of 2022. Congratulations to all!

I agree that asking an AO about this would be a no-no. For my DS he had emailed to update information on his file, and the AO had replied to say it was too late as the file had been reviewed already - that's how he knew it had already been looked over. But for everyone to email just to find out if they had been reviewed would certainly create a lot more work for the academy and likely slow down their ability to do the necessary admissions work. So good call on your part saying it would not be a good idea!

Emailed AO to update as well. Also stated that my file hasn’t been reviewed yet and isn’t up for review this week. I submitted my application at the end of September.

Did you get an email a week or two after saying that your application will soon be up for review in the next two weeks?

Yes I believe I received the email stating it will be reviewed in the next two weeks on October 18th. From what it seems most people are being reviewed well after two weeks. They are probably very busy.

Looking at it from my DS experience with EA a few years back, there are initial rounds of review for all applicants where it seems three things happen:
1- appointment offer given -top candidates, LOA candidates
2- rejection
3- delayed decision (appointment, rejection, wait list) to be made later in EA (close to final decision date) -basically candidate is not unique/competitive enough to automatically select so let's see how he compares to other EA candidates once all reviewed and how many slots left after those top candidates have been given one.

My DS was reviewed in October the year he applied EA but did not get decision until final decisions handed out in late December.

It is neither a good or bad sign to not have any decision yet, just means they are still to either review the candidate or still to make a decision.
If a candidate has a relationship with a coach, they will probably call them if they get appointed.

Given the postings in the forum, we know that admissions board have not completed all the initial reviews.

December should be a busy month and we are less than 4 weeks away from final decisions.

Good luck to those still waiting.

Does anyone know of an LOA recipient that hasn’t heard anything yet? I received an LOA and was told I would probably hear of a decision around TG but nothing yet.
