What should I do?

This is a very unique situation...

There is a freshmen (C/O 2021) D1 athlete at a prestigious university, who should remain nameless, who is also a contracted Army ROTC cadet. The Athlete/Cadet applied to West Point last year as a senior in high school as a recruited athlete with a (3.4 GPA and high athletic and extra circular honors with AP Classes and had attended the USMA SLE) and was granted an LOA to the Prep School. At the time, the individual chose to go another route which was the university route with ROTC and athletics. But now at the end of first semester, the individual remains thinking about the academy and the desire to do something bigger as ROTC doesn't have the same weight as being an academy cadet has. But in order to gain contact with the academy, it would require getting a release form from the athletic department meaning possibly burning your bridges at the current university in order to contact the academies. Would you recommend that the individual pursues possibly burning bridges to try and pursue the academy route or play it safe due to not knowing that they for sure would be able to attend an academy next year and not ruin their current situation? Also even though they are currently contracted army could they apply and contact other branches if they went this route to attempt to get into any of the academies? (current GPA: about a 3.1 academic through first semester and excelling in ROTC with contracting complete and excelling in athletics)

That is a very difficult situation. In my opinion if he or she really wants West Point..and they have nice academics, etc...my advice would always be to chase your dreams. That's just me though. On the bright side if he or she is contracted in ROTC as a MSI he or she will not have to pay anything back, so long he or she tell the program up until May 1 I believe. As for the athletics again it comes down to how bad this person wants west point if they are willing to make this sacrifice, and why they didn't decide to accept prep school? Pros and cons list. I am a college reapplicant as well. I hope it all works out for the best in the end. Best of luck!

My 2 cents - stay where you are.
It is too late to apply for this year, so the application would be for next year. Chasing your dreams has its place but this person would be at the 'prestigious university' for 2 years already before starting over at WP/any SA. Does this person really want to be in college for 6 years? Does this person understand that the credits earned at this uni will not transfer to any Service Academy in such a way as to shorten their time at the SA?

A FFR might be able to advise on how competitive they are for actually gaining admittance at a SA with current grades/ROTC accomplishments. The GPA seems low to me, but the SAs look at the whole person.

It's late for Class of 2022, but not necessarily too late. USMA application deadline is end of February. Medical qualification should still be valid. Nomination might be tough, but not insurmountable.

When I applied from college as a varsity athlete (many years ago before recruiting became so organized), coach was very supportive and even administered CFA.

3.1 GPA at a prestigious university is good if the curriculum is similar to USMA, assuming "prestigious" is Ivy League, Duke, Notre Dame, Amherst, Williams, Michigan, UVA, etc.

these are both very smart and valid points that I failed to think about..definitely keep these thoughts in mind before my post
