Has anyone had any experience gaining 3 Year Army ROTC scholarships from VT or The Citadel? I am very interested.

Campus Base Scholarships

PJ01720...All of us have campus based ROTC scholarships. At Norwich University our ROTC Departments award more campus based scholarships than they offer to incoming freshman...and this past year 127 of our incoming freshman brought a 4-year ROTC scholarship to Norwich. I've taken the liberty of finding the links for both The Citadel and VT for you...and recommend you contact them directly if you have any other questions. Best of luck...

If you come to Norwich with an academic scholarship and then get a campus based ROTC scholarship what happens to the academic one? Does Norwich give out any 100% full ride academic scholarships?

Lt. Col Davison,

The Citadel website is very informative. Thank you. I actually talked with Lt. Col Brady today about financing my education at the Citadel if I was unable to obtain a 4 year scholarship. However, he didn't mention the 3.5 year scholarships. He also told me the standards go up for out of state cadets who are looking to earn a 4 year scholarship. Nonetheless, I hope to get some sort of Army ROTC scholarship.

Annette...if you get a campus-based scholarship...it will cover all of your costs at Norwich...so the academic scholarship would go away...as you wouldn't need it. The ROTC scholarship would cover tuition, books, fees and include a monthly stipend (allowance). Norwich would automatically pick up your room and board costs.

Hi! My son wants to attend Norwich very much. The cost is making me quite wary. He is not holding his breath to earn an 4 year AFROTC scholarship. He has mentioned the 3 year scholarship. I can't find anything regarding how realistic it is to consider that may be an option. Are there only a few 3 year scholarships or more, nor how competitive it is.

I actually can't speak to AFROTC chances but it certainly happens with Army and Navy. That being said, as a manager in the computer science field I had to put together many development plans and schedules. I was never impressed with schedules that had one or more "miracle occurs here" events which were required to make them come together. As far as I'm concerned one should never plan on a scholarship of any kind, but be pleasantly surprised if they receive one.

Ask your DS what happens if he doesn't get the scholarship? Does he transfer to another college? DO people (hopefully him) go further into debt to continue attending Norwich? What if he ends up at Norwich and decides ROTC is not for him and he drops from the program. Trust me, it happens.

I'm sure there are much more reasonable priced colleges with majors he wants and excellent ROTC programs. He ought to be seriously considering them. If he wins a 4 year, then by all means go for it at Norwich.

Just my 2 cents.

There is zero chance he will go to a college without afrotc. But we are definitely looking at other options. The best finance package will prevail. It will be heartbreaking to not be able to send him to his first choice if that package doesn’t work out. He wants to major in History. We can find lots of good programs for history. It’s afrotc that is limited in New England.

Be aware that the Air Force currently reserves about 80% of its scholarships for STEM majors, a history major will not be at all marketable. If he is looking to commission as an AF Officer a liberal arts degree is not the way to go, look at Political Science, Chinese or Arabic as an alternative.

Are you saying you can’t get commissioned with a history major these days in afrotc? I ask because the rotc instructor we spoke to was, in fact, a history major who went on to be a pilot. Or are you referring to the 3 year scholarship?

Is this true for all services? As I understand, this is not true for Air Force. But I may be wrong.

Of course, you can get commissioned in the Air Force with a history major. It is the SCHOLARSHIPS that are heavily weighted towards STEM majors. But is important to remember that you can commission in the AF without a scholarship. You will just have to shell out the tuition yourself.

Meanwhile Army and Marines could care less what your major is when they award scholarships.

At The Citadel, ROTC scholarships are not the only financial aid available - financial need determines aid, as does high school credentials and standardized tests - SAT and ACT. If you are accepted into the Honors Scholars program, you automatically qualify for a $10,000 academic scholarship which can supplement your ROTC scholarship up to the cost of attendance. Army and Navy ROTC scholarships cover tuition plus books and fees. Air Force has a different scale for tuition depending on the type of scholarship you receive. At The Citadel it is possible to arrive with a 3 year Army national scholarship and qualify for a 3.5 year award based on your performance. There are also 2 year campus based ROTC scholarships. The Citadel also awards an additional Armed Forces scholarship of $3,500 per year to national ROTC scholarship cadets during the years they receive their scholarship - if their high school grades and SAT/ACT scores meet certain minimum standards.
