OK, got a nomination to top choice academy and that application is now complete!!

Now, the next question is should the applications at the other academies be closed? Have only heard from one of the nomination sources but did indicated during each interview which academy was the top pick. There is still work to be done on the other academies files (forms, writing samples, etc).

What are the pros and cons of completing or closing the other academies application?

Do the nomination sources need notified if the applications are closed?

Any input is appreciated.

You can find the answer by thinking about two questions:
  • What do you gain by closing the other applications?
  • What could you potentially lose by closing the other applications?

if you complete the applications you might avoid recurrent nightmares....

Not worth the risk. Apply to other schools, because you never know what could happen that will (most likely medically) disqualify you. Could be an injury, could be an accident, could be anything. Although it's extra work, it will be beneficial in the worst case scenario that you end up being unable to attend the academy.

You can't lose anything by leaving your other applications open...

but you can by closing them.

If your application is complete*, you have an LOA, and a nomination, then it is reasonable to expect an offer of appointment.

There are a myriad of things that can preclude being inducted, even with an appointment.
So cancelling "Plan B" is a bad idea.
You should always have a "Plan B".

* "Complete" means (at least on the USNA Candidate Information System website)
In your CIS status window it reads;
Application Status Conditional Offer of Appointment LOA
Required Actions None
Special Instructions None
and under "NOMINATIONS" it has the Nomination Source and date filled in.
