Hello everyone,
I am a junior in high school in New York right now and I see on the forum that going to Boys/Girls state is a great addition to an application. So I emailed my guidance counsellor about it and she reached out to people in my district, and they’ve never heard of the program. She also reached out to the contacts on the NY girls state website (which hasnt been updated for a while) and she didn’t get a reply. I was just wondering what I should do because I don’t want to let this opportunity pass by. Also, what is the timeline for applying, just so I can make sure that I do everything in time. Who else should I contact?

Thanks

Try reaching out to the American Legion directly in your area. They might assist your school or allow you to self sponsor.

Yes, do this. I went to Girls Nation and am good friends with 2 GN Senators from the 2017 New York session. They both come from Long Island and one of them (I roomed with her; she rested on the bunk above mine) has an LOA to USMA so when we talk to each other, we finish our text conversations with "see you on R-day" as a joke (because there are 1200+ kids and odds are we won't come into contact). If you'd like me to contact them about this opportunity, just let me know what you want an answer to and I'll hit them up.

By the way, my DS's high school counselor back in 2015, had also not heard of the program. It turned out that the school discontinued sponsorships about 10 years earlier. My son's prompting re-opened the program to the school and they have been sponsoring delegates to both programs ever since.

It is true that some schools do not actively participate in Boys/Girls State. As AROTC-dad says, ALA can sponsor kids to go. In some states, there is even an option to attend under an "other" category (in case you're home schooled or something), but this is not common. I could ask Ashley and Brenda (the 2017 NY GN delegates) if they allow this, but odds are they won't remember. I'd ask your counselor about this or even go onto the website/call ALA and see if they'll allow this option for you.

Ive been talking to my guidance counsellor and it seems that this program isnt known in my school, maybe for the reason AROTC-dad said. She just emailed some contacts listed on the website AROTC-dad gave so hopefully we will hear back. Thanks for your reply.

Hello again
Ive been talking to my guidance counsellor. Shes been emailing contacts from the Girls State website and the other website but we havent gotten any replies. I dont know what to do. Any ideas???

We had the same thing happen with my son, school tried getting info, we tried getting info. I ended up physically showing up at our American Legion Office. We had to self sponsor him, but he was able to go.

Agree with Momof3kids.

Go down to the American Legion Office and speak with someone there about self sponsorship or set up a conference call with them and your DD's school counselor.

Hi there, I saw your post and had to sign up here as I know exactly what you are up against. My daughter wanted to go to Girls State for NY and it took us endless hours and phone calls, but she was sponsored by a Legion out of our area (we actually made a donation for the cost) and ultimately made it to Girls Nation in 2017. GoArmy 2022 mentioned her, her name is Ashley. I’d love to try and help you. Please contact me through Private messaging. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Oh, my god! I absolutely love your daughter! She was my roommate at GN and is a ton of fun! I can't give you my name, obviously, but tell her a fellow future West Pointer said hello and she'll know exactly who it is :D

Thanks GoArmy 2022.....My daughter has spoken very highly of you as well. So proud of both of you! Can’t wait to meet you!
