With an LOE, a 3Q, and a nomination from one senator and my district rep, how likely is it that I could be given an appointment? I know nothing is certain, and I’ve prepared for that, but patience is not one my better qualities, and I just want to know if these three items hold a lot of weight compared to the the other candidates in the current pool?

Continue to improve in any area that may not be perfect right up until the close of application window. Unlike a LOA, a LOE does not guarantee an appointment if 3Q with a nomination. DD received LOE last year and was 3Q with two nominations...she did not win her slate (ended up 2nd) and is currently an AOG sponsored prep awaiting her appointment for Class of 2022. Any last minute improvement in test scores, CAR or class standing for anyone on your slate can juggle the whole candidate scores, thus changing the appointments. A LOE does say that West Point sees something in you that makes them want you but you still have to win your slate, be high enough on NWL to be in top 150 or fill a class composition need. Hang in there...as long as you put your very best foot forward you will have no regrets no matter the outcome.

Do you mind sharing your stats: activities, scores, and sports?

Also BTW, I read from a thread that 80% of LOE recipients are admitted to West Point. 3Q is diffrent than being 3Q and holding a LOE. Hope to see you soon. Go Army! Beat Navy!

34 ACT, 4.2 GPA, 4/120 class, Boys State (boys nation finalist), President of NHS, Head editor of yearbook, part time tutor, and my downfall is only one year of varsity baseball. I also did SLE. Those are the biggies.

Yes, the 80% was an estimated statistic from a young female who works with Admissions. Can’t quite remember her name but I met her during my visit. Don’t take that statistic to heart. It was just her guess.

As far as LOE/LOA credentials go, I could probably find some links with kids reporting their stats on them. Don’t absorb yourself in copying someone else’s resume. Everyone gets an LOE/LOA for their own reason, and sometimes admitted candidates get neither. I was lucky enough to get both. You can find my credentials here:

Don’t be stressed out about having connections to West Point, the Army, or military service at all. I have none. There will be kids there whose parents served for 20+ years and were West Point graduates. That’s just the way it is, but being prepared for the application process is your job. It is not your parents’.

Good luck!

Very good point made with this quote. Just because you don't receive an LOE or LOA doesn't mean you aren't competitive. I am sure there are plenty of very qualified candidates in very competitive states that receive neither. The SA's don't need to offer these to this candidate base. They have many to choose from.

DS just signed into his portal and has another nomination listed dated today, which totals 5 nominations. We are assuming the last one has to be Vice President? He has not received a letter. Has a LOE, 3 Q. Anyone know when USMA is making their first set of appointments? Last year my older son received his on Jan 11th so it could be soon.

I doubt one is the VP. If he already had four nominations, why would they need to use the VP slot? He has 2 senators, 1 congress representative, and if he qualifies for the Presidential and JROTC/Service Connected, that can add up to 5.

WOW. That's impressive, what state?

The type of nomination should be listed in the portal. If it is the VP, then it would say VP.

Definitely not the VP nom. That's generally reserved for someone they want Who had no nom.

Reminder to all of the applicants (and parents) that do not have five nominations - it just takes one nomination to complete the nomination requirement. There are many cadets walking the halls at West Point (as well as USNA and USAFA) who only received one nomination.

I thought the Presidential was the service connected one? Anyway , doesn't matter, he got a call tonight, he is in. Best of luck to everyone. My older son was also appointed, did not have 5 appointments, and he is a plebe as we speak .

Thanks FMHS-79. Hopeful thoughts for those candidates riding along in steerage with 1 nomination (like my DS). :) Unfortunately no call for him today. Hoping for next wave in February.
