I'm a little confused... How exactly will our children be notified if they receive an Appointment? Will it be a message in the Portal? Package in the mail? I saw where some people received calls from their Congressman first?

My grandson received a notice of his appointment on his portal in the form of a letter informing him that he has until May 1 to accept or decline; and, that acceptance or declination is done online whereupon additional information on travel and in-processing information will then appear on his portal upon acceptance.

Fantastic, Thank you, and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! How long ago did he receive his notice of appointment?

I got a call from my Congressional Rep and then like a week or so later they updated the portal

The letter on the portal was dated Jan 5. He received a LOA dated December 18 and had received a call from a member of our senior senator's nominating committee a day or two thereafter that he was the principal candidate. The nomination, however, did not appear on the portal until about a week after the call. He's still waiting to hear from USNA where he had nominations as well.

All of USAFA's communications are electronic, so don't expect any sort of notification by mail. Typically your MOC is notified several days before your portal is updated. Some MOCs will choose to call their appointees to congratulate them first and others won't. If you fall into this latter group expect your notification to come via a portal update. Furthermore, the portal only updates once a day, so if you don't receive anything by about 5 in the morning you can throw in the towel for that day.

I wish I knew this earlier before spending my days refreshing my portal!

Notification is all over the board. Sometimes it's an Email. Sometimes it's a portal update. Sometimes it's a phone call.
I don't think it would typically be by mail, unless the candidate receives the offer on the portal and accepts it electronically.
If I were The Government, I would save the postage for the BFE unless the candidate accepts online first.
That's just me though. I'm frugal. :)

Here is a much abbreviated sequence of events for my DS (Class of 2020):
Email saying portal updated->Portal had appointment announcement->Family celebration :jump1:->Call from MOC

All this happened within just a couple of hours. Moral of the story? Answer the call if it is from a private or unlisted number! Very likely could be the MOC calling to congratulate or notify you.

Yep....DS was napping, over the holiday break, and it went to voicemail. At least he left a nice voicemail. Not sure what the etiquette is for that...call him back haha, but he save the VM. Kind of neat to have.
