Uniform Stars at the CGA

There are three stars that can be worn on a cadet's uniform, which are for physical, military and academic performance. Walking around the academy, it didn't look like there were many of the Military performance stars. I'm sure I only saw one or two of them, but saw plenty of gold and bronze stars. I saw no cadet with 3 stars. Looking at the other SA's, seems like almost everyone gets a military performance star or the equivalence (only looked at Navy and AF). Is there a higher standard at the CGA for Military Performance?

Of course there is a higher standard at USCGA! Not “just” militarily speaking.

There used to be four stars, but you could only wear the top three....

There were gold, silver, blue and bronze. That has probably changed.

There are also stars with wreaths for command positions (such as company commanders and the regimental commander).

Once you graduate, you don’t wear these things.

DD and I were discussing this over Christmas leave. It seems there are currently 3 stars available, all three in gold, silver, or bronze. One is for the PFE, and I believe the scores are 270 for bronze (DD missed it by 1 point in the fall and is determined to earn it this semester!), 285 for silver, and a perfect 300 for gold. I believe the gold star for academics is a 3.1 (she's getting that one with a 3.3, her lowest GPA ever!), and she was nominated for a silver star for military performance. She says she doubts that she will get it as many are recommended for the three levels of the military star, but only the top 15% of those recommended for each level are actually awarded the privilege of wearing the star.

From my conversation with DD, I think I would agree with you that the military performance star would be the most difficult to earn as the cadet is dependent on both a recommendation and a selection process, whereas the other two are more clearly defined and directly influenced by cadet effort.

This explanation regarding the stars is incorrect. There are not three level of stars, there are only three stars awarded to cadets.

Bronze star (Athletics Director's List) is awarded when a cadet achieves 270 on their PFE. A PFE score of 285 qualifies for the "Max Club" and those cadets have their name added to the plaque in Roland Hall, and a score of 300 earns inscription on the "300 Club" plaque. Bronze stars are worn during the semester in which they are earned.

Silver star (Commandant of Cadets' List) is awarded based on Military Precedence Index, and only the top 25% of cadets in their respective class per company are recommended. Company Officers make the final determination as to the number of stars awarded. Silver stars are worn during the semester succeeding when they are achieved.

Gold star (Dean's List) is awarded to cadets who attain a TGPA of 3.15 or greater, and have no grade of D or lower. Gold stars are worn during the semester succeeding when they are achieved.

Superintendent's List are those cadets that have earned both the gold and silver stars.

Board of Trustees' List are those cadets that have earned all three stars.

The above information was taken from the current Cadet Regulations.

Wow, that's what I get for talking to a teenager!! Thanks for clarifying all this. Sorry to have misled anyone.

Is there any way I can just delete my incorrect post?
