I'm kind of scared about being short. I'm 17 and 5'9'' and I want to know how I stack against anyone here at WP or a WP hopeful. Especially any of you SLS people.

What can I do to grow faster other than eating a lot and sleeping a lot?

5' 9" is taller than I. You have nothing to worry about. Just remember that bigger you are the more area the enemy has to shoot at.

And being bigger also means that you probably had that much more muscles to jump to cover or that much more upperbody strength to win in hand to hand combat

Im just scared of looking like a wimp. I mean, I wouldnt be scared if I had some more meat on me, but I'd rather be taller than buffer.

My son is 5'9" and I would say he is about average for the cadets at West Point. You will not even be close to being the shortest one there.

Genetics will decide how tall you are so there isn't anything you can do about it. Exercise, eat right, and get enough sleep; this will keep you healthy and your body will grow if it is meant to. :thumb:

I'm 5"8. Don't worry you're about average.

My rising Yuk is around 5'5". Believe it or not, he was *not* the shortest male there! Cadets come in all heights and sizes. No one will give you a hard time for your stature.

Don't be too worried about your weight or muscle mass at this point either. Smaller statures tend to gain weight in muscle during Beast. You will get plenty of exercise to develop and maintain toned muscle mass with the workouts at USMA. In other words, no need to worry about "looking like a wimp"!

What exactly is Beast? And how hard is the PT at SLS anyway?

Beast is the name for plebe summer. It runs from Rday (reporting day) until the beginning of the "reorganization," when the upperclasspersons report. During beast, new cadets (the only thing lower than plebes) are taught many useful things, including, but not limited to: shoe polishing, gun cleaning, shirt folding, marching, pie slicing, and how to address superiors.

Someone else will have to chime in on SLS PT. My Yuk did not attend this program.

Beast Barracks is what USMA calls Cadet Basic Training. It is six to seven weeks long (depending on how much field training USMA includes in a particular year), beginning on R-Day when new cadets report in in late June and ending with A-Day, or Acceptance Day in August when the new cadets become "cadets" and begin the academic year with the rest of the Corps. Cadet Basic Training includes a wide variety of training activities ranging from the physical preparation for passing the APFT (lots of exercise) to taking academic placement exams to military strategies, briefings, and some rather intense but fun activities such as Warrior competition and The House of Tears (tear gas chamber).

I cannot address the issue of PT at SLS as my son did not attend, but from what I have heard it is very do-able for most who attend. I think you are given the option of taking the CFA (Candidate Fitness Assessment - a requirement for admission to USMA) there. Many who plan to apply to USMA are able to finish that requirement at SLS and they are one step closer to the goal of a completed application the fall of their senior year. Hopefully a past SLS attendee will chime in on your PT question.

Lol, mom3boys beat me again!! Sorry I repeated some of her same thoughts, but I think I was writing them first

i attended SLS last summer. pt occurred bright and early each morning but was quite manageable. the cadre seemed quite aware that they were dealing with a wide variety of kids ranging from serious candidates to those whose parents probably didn't give them a choice about going or not.

the CFT was not optional. everyone took it on the same day at the same time. a good number of us were able to pass...one less thing to worry about during nomination/application process.

i'm still very confused about the weight of the CFA. i have no doubt that i will pass but does the overall grade u get play a big part in ur candidate profile. is it simply a pass fail or not?

they say it counts for 10% of your overall application. As long as you pass, it probably won't effect your chances all that much one way or the other.
