NROTC - SWO Ship selection

Same news for our DS but two days later....Feb 14 Valentine’s Day!

Cheers Sr. We may be gone but I can assure you we have not been forgotten. Snipes lement my friend!

Story Time: On My sons 1st class cruise he was asked about E1’s right up through the stars by a new JG. Sitting in the corner of the wardroom was a Warrent. When the JG was done the CW said Midshipmen X the JG forgot one....do you know what a CW is? Without skipping a beat my son said “Sir, with all do respect it’s not talked about much; however, my father said a warrent Officer is god” The JG gave my DS some lip until the CW stopped him and explained it was an old school answer. The CW asked my DS what my rate was so he told him... “a hole snipe sir, my father was a BT. The CW took my DS under his wing for the entire cruise. He said to my son “your father worked hard, you might want to listen to his advise if you want to become a good officer.

It felt good to know our reputation lives on. Again, gone but we are not forgotten. Let’s punch some tubes! I did not have the support to become a distinguished Naval Officer but I will forever be a proud former BT....a hole snipe!

Respectful to all please take the time to read “the snipes lament”. Just trying to keep the fire burning and the steam flowing.

SNIPE'S LAMENT

Now each of us from time to time has gazed upon the sea
and watched the mighty warships pulling out to keep this country free.
And most of us have read a book or heard a lusty tale,
about these men who sail these ships through lightning, wind and hail.
But there's a place within each ship that legend's fail to teach.
It's down below the water-line and it takes a living toll
- - a hot metal living hell, that sailors call the "Hole."
It houses engines run with steam that makes the shafts go round.
A place of fire, noise, and heat that beats your spirits down.
Where boilers like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam,
are molded gods without remorse, are nightmares in a dream.

Whose threat from the fires roar, is like a living doubt,
that at any moment with such scorn, might escape and crush you out.
Where turbines scream like tortured souls, alone and lost in Hell,
are ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell.
The men who keep the fires lit and make the engines run,
are strangers to the light and rarely see the sun.
They have no time for man or God, no tolerance for fear,
their aspect pays no living thing a tribute of a tear.
For there's not much that men can do that these men haven't done,
beneath the decks, deep in the hole, to make the engines run.
And every hour of every day they keep the watch in Hell,
for if the fires ever fail their ship's a useless shell.

When ships converge to have a war upon an angry sea,
the men below just grimly smile at what their fate will be.
They're locked below like men fore-doomed, who hear no battle cry,
it's well assumed that if they're hit men below will die.
For every day's a war down there when gauges all read red,
twelve-hundred pounds of heated steam can kill you mighty dead.

So if you ever write their songs or try to tell their tale,
the very words would make you hear a fired furnace's wail.
And people as a general rule don't hear of these men of steel,
so little heard about this place that sailors call the "Hole."
But I can sing about this place and try to make you see,
the hardened life of the men down there, 'cause one of them is me.
I've seen these sweat-soaked heroes fight in superheated air,
to keep their ship alive and right, though no one knows they're there.

And thus they'll fight for ages on till warships sail no more,
amid the boiler's mighty heat and the turbine's hellish roar.
So when you see a ship pull out to meet a war-like foe,
remember faintly if you can, "The Men Who Sail Below."

My son will get his ship selection on the 12th as well. Anyone know where to find the NROTC SWO ship selection list? I can only find USNA (or are they the same?)

Thanks

I’m not so sure you can find the ship selection for NROTC. My DS said that his unit had the same areas as the Academy. HI, FL, CA, Spain, and Japan. I was in Regan’s Navy of over 350 ships....they were all great ships because they were all USS. Sooo no matter what they select they will still be a great ships because they are all still USS.

Haze gray and underway, shift colors!

DS was so excited to watch this and see that someone chose his choice- SWO-IWC on the Reagan :D

Exciting evening!

A link to the NROTC ship selection list should show up shortly on the same page the USNA list was on if it is like last year. You should also be able to log on and watch via internet as ships are selected and registered on the list (again, if it is like last year)

Bman if you see the link could you please post. As much as I’m on a computer if I try to copy and paste it the omnipotent computer devels will go after me and I will fail with style

Watched some of my sons friends yesterday. My son was expected to go today but they rolled him over to be up early tomorrow morning. His choice is still available so he is happy.
