My DS is waiting to hear if USAFA will request a medical waiver or not. I know some are receiving appointment notices etc and it’s that time of year ... my question is, will USAFA request a waiver and if a waiver is granted offer the appointment at that time (that is assuming he receives an appointment) or will they offer the appointment contingent on him receiving a waiver (again assuming an appointment is given at all)? Thanks!

They are most likely to not grant an appointment until the waiver is approved. There deadline is tomorrow so after that they can start resolving congressional slates. If your DS is #1 or #2 on the slate the waiver process will start. If they are 5 or 6 on the slate, admissions will probably not start the process.

I am also in a similar situation. I have a nomination but still am awaiting a decision on whether a medical waiver will be requested or not by USAFA. Just to clarify, the deadline for notification of whether they will request a waiver or not is tomorrow? Will they notify the candidates at all if no medical waiver is requested?

Thanks,
Zach

Army2022Hopeful, The deadline for nominations to be received by the Academy is January 31 and all applications should be complete as well, meaning the Academy can make decisions. You will be notified if a waiver is requested and whether or not it is granted. Good luck!!

Thank you for the info. That’s what we had assumed. We don’t know where he is on the slate but we do know that 16 nominations were submitted for 2 open spots for USAFA and 11 nominations for 2 spots for USMA.

I agree with USMA 1994:

It is a very hard road. In rough numbers, 10,000-12,000 complete their SA applications. Roughly 4,000 receive Congressional nominations, Approximately 2,400 of those nominated are considered "qualified academicly and in physical aptitude". (Notice it doesn't say qualified medically -- qualified physically means CFA. ).

The Academy can accept 1200. They'd like all 2,400, but can only accept 1200.

So...about 500 of the 1200 are principle Noms from a MOC. About 200 are recruited athletes/prep school/LOA. So that leaves about 1,700 well qualified candidates (some 2Q as opposed to 3Q) vying for the remaining 500 slots. The Academy then selects those remaining 500 out of the 1700 to "meet the needs of the Academy" in terms of class makeup in order to best represent our military and our society. In some ways, in many ways, an appointment offer is a lotto ticket.

Be proud if you or your DD/DS made it into the final 2400. That is pretty rarified air.

Is this for PA? Congressional area?

Have you heard the rumor that to support the military needs, USAFA is looking at increasing the class size to 1400-1500 and increasing the summer BCT squads from 8 to 10?

i am not sure we should spread these types of rumors, unless the current three classes have had a significant number of cadets leave, the class size will stay pretty constant from year to year. The authorized strength of the academy is determined by congress. An increase in the number of cadets would take a change to the current laws.

Non-International Cadet numbers as of 31 Dec 17 totaled 4187, with the 2018 graduating class standing at 1006 (not sure how many are international, let's estimate 13 out of the 53). For the sake of argument, if numbers stay the same, after graduation the cadet strength will be 3194. Therefore, if you do the math based on current authorizations, USAFA needs just over 1200 to meet its 4400 authorized strength. As USMA 1994 stated, unless Congress changes the law, 1400 - 1500 would put the Academy well over the top of their allowance.
