Question: AFROTC Scholarship Schools

I recently received an Air Force ROTC scholarship, but in the email and the website there was no indication of the schools I could use the scholarship at. It was my understanding we ranked our preferences and they picked three we could go to.

Is this not the case (and we can go wherever?) or do we find out later the schools we've gotten picked for?

Apologies if this has already been laid out somewhere...

Here are the basics. Have you been accepted at any of the schools you have applied to?

There are several regular posters here with AFROTC insights. With luck, you’ll get more info.

Yeah I have been accepted to a few of the ones I listed... Should I be updating someone on that?

I've read through what you sent and it just says you have to go to an Air Force approved school for that major.

DD is in the same situation. Accepted to 3 senior military colleges. None are in state, two public and 1 private. We have many of the same questions that you must have. Thanks for posting.

Air Force ROTC differs from Navy in that scholarships aren't tied to specific schools. You might have to convert the scholarship type if you go to an out of state school (4-year type 7 to 3-year type 2), but you can activate your scholarship at any school you're accepted to. I'm honestly not sure why they even ask what schools you want to attend, although someone on here might have an idea.

I have been told before the reason they ask is from a manpower personnel perspective. The AF likes to move personnel in the summer, which means during the prior academic school yr (now) they may see a certain college not having a high demand as it has over the past few years, but another does, they then may decide to increase or decrease the personnel size at those dets.
~ Realize they get about 5K applicants per year for scholarships, which means if you look at it from a pool size that may be entering in the fall they can see where they may be short in personnel.

As others have stated you can take it to any college that is on their approved list, BUT if you have a type 7 and go OOS that charges more than your in state you will need to convert the 7 to a 3 yr 2.
~ IE you live in GA, but TAMU is your number 1 choice. TAMU has a policy that if you get a 1K scholarship from them, than they will you charge you IS. THUS, you can use the type 7. However, you get accepted to VT (another SMC) does not have that rule, THUS you would be OOS and need to convert to a type 2 3 yr.

I think $1K is now $4k but if you have an ROTC scholarship then TAMU will always consider you as in-state so you can use Type 7.
DS has a Type 7, he is deciding between TAMU, Purdue and Michigan...TAMU seems to be no brainer but that just me

Not just you. For all but a few very rare scenarios, TAMU makes the most sense.

The difference between four years of in-state TAMU tuition and 4 years of out-of-state (OOS) tuition at Purdue and U-M is vast:
- Purdue OOS = additional $83,160
- U-M OOS = additional $149,064

I remember a time when a medical degree cost less than either of the above sums. And now we good citizens are being asked to spend a greater sum on ... an UNDERGRADUATE degree? This is insane.

It's hard to make a convincing case for spending $150k to go to U-M. Playing the prestige card - ie pointing to how great the U-M aero eng. program is, or how many U-M CS grads land software engineering jobs out of college at AAPL GOOG MS AMZN etc. - won't cut it.

What if DS decides against aero, or decides he doesn't want to look at screens all day and bang out code? Unless he decides he wants to work on Wall Street or go to law school, Poof! goes the U-M advantage.

Save your $$$ and run, not walk, to TAMU. If DS decides on grad school down the line, he'll have more savings to do so. He can always go to U-M or Purdue or GA Tech or wherever for a master's, MBA, PhD or medical degree.

Michigan Tech also waives OOS charges for ROTC recipients. AND they cover room and board on a first-come first-served basis for a limited number of cadets.

Thibaud, I fully agree. There is one question that we don’t know the answer, DS has called TAMU few times but hasn’t gotten a clear answer. Please reply if anyone knows the answer-
DS is medically not cleared yet. As I understand, he can accept the scholarship but it won’t be activated until he is medically cleared. So the question is will TAMU still consider him in-state even the scholarship is not activated due pending medical DQ. If the answer is yes, then TAMU is the way to go...
