Hello from Mn!

My Son recently decided he 100% committed to attending USMMA. (He's turning down a scholarship to play football but will use that option as a last resort if he cannot get accepted to MMA) We are finishing up the Candidate Application now, the fitness and medical evals are done and so far has received 3 nominations from Senators/Representatives.

It appears they only want letters of recommendation from school officials?? Seems odd they would not accept letters from others who have known him for much longer. His High School counselor knows very little about him because it is her first year at his school.

This forum is very helpful!

Thanks in advance

Admissions is adamant about the letter coming from his counselor. Your DS must go to the counselor and explain that he needs a letter from her. Bring the USMMA application and show the counselor the requirement. My DS obtained a letter from the Dean of Students and USMMA Admissions said we still needed one from his counselor.

Good luck

When our DS (2021) met with USMMA Admissions, the subject of recommendation letters came up. He advised to include a few (2-3) letters with his app from the people who know him best. Bombarding the Admissions Office with a pile of recommendation letters is a waste of time. He told our DS that they'll only read a few of them anyway, knowing that all of them will most likely say the same thing.
Good Luck!

Just recently? USMMA has plenty of applications to fill out their class. True, it is due March 1, fully completed but I believe most applications are complete and have been so for months.

Maybe your son will get an appointment, but time is not on your side. School counselors, teachers, etc. Are infamous for dragging their feet in completion of required letters, and transcripts. Your boy needs to get going. The academies like eager, locked on applicants that are motivated and self starters.

Perhaps the OP is looking at class of 2023?

He is applying for 2022, yes I know in a perfect situation we would have done everything months ago but hes not the first 18 yr old that changed his mind at the last minute. I spoke with the school counselor and principle today, they are on track and assured me everything will be sent in next week. I also spoke to admissions and they assured me that if all the required info was in on time he will be considered like the rest of the qualified applicants.
Again, Thanks for the info!

I think what the others were saying is that applying earlier allows for your son's application to get reviewed sooner. And if he is an outstanding student who is very competitive he could possibly have been accepted early. Their is nothing wrong with applying later except you have to wait longer. Everyone gets the same evaluation and will be considered. I wish the best of luck to your son through this difficult process!

Has your DS been to Kings Point? If you can make it happen I recommend you get him out there to see the campus, Admissions and the football coaching staff...Overnight if possible.

That is a great idea and we are already talking about it.

Also I just realized that one of his Nominations is a Principle Nomination, I did some quick research and it appears that if he is fully qualified he has a better chance of getting a appointment?

Unfortunately, USMMA does not have Principle Nominations because it is by state quota, not district. Good luck to your DS! Hope to see him at USMMA this summer! Keep us posted on what he thinks of the campus after your visit.
