I think my odds are pretty good for the Academy as I have received two nominations. I received one from my congressman (not the primary) and one from my senator. Does anyone know when I should receive a notification if I have been accepted or not? Will it notify my portal or be in the mail first? And if anyone knows what they think my odds are it would be very helpful. I don’t want to get my hopes up too high because I have heard of plenty of people with multiple nominations and still get turned down, especially when I think my area is not super competitive for USAFA.

I received my rejection last year on April 17th, 2017. My portal updated around lunchtime on that day (I received an email first). I too had two nominations. Having more nominations gives you more chances to win the appointment whatever nomination slate you’re on. So in your case, you’ll be competing for the appointment from your state as well as your district. If you don’t win either of these then your application will go to the National Pool and compete against everyone else who didn’t win their slate.

To be honest, I’m really glad I didn’t go straight to the Academy because I wouldn’t have been prepared. I am currently doing a year of prep at Marion Military Institute. I highly recommend the prep year route but I would be sure to do it at a school where you can get college credit.

As you’ve probably read, no one can tell you your chances. I would just keep an open mind and have your backup plans in place. But also keep in mind that you’re not out until the tell you. Best of luck!

Nominations don't mean much. You need one to be appointable, but there are lots more nominees than appointees. I wouldn't start counting your chickens just yet.

You might be #1 on your MOC slate, but that doesn't mean you'll be appointed. Some nominees arent 3Q'ed, and most that are 3Q'ed arent appointed.

I've seen some stellar 3Q'ed kids turned down.

In the most recent incoming class (class of 2021) approximately 60% of those who were nominated and fully qualified were extended offers of appointment. If you feel that your application package places you among the fully qualified, and you know you have a nomination or two, this gives you a pretty decent chance of success.

Does the state and district in which you live play a large role in being part of the percentage of candidates that receive an appointment?

Straight from the source, USAFA: http://www.neoafapa.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/2021_-_Demographic_Profiles.224160126.pdf
And USMA: https://www.usma.edu/admissions/sitepages/class profiles.aspx

Hard to argue with hard data. Our 3Q letter states (USMA) that most appointments are between 2/26 and 5/1 2018.
Good luck.

It has nothing to do with the state you live but it all has to do with what your nomination slate looks like that year. You could have three MOC nominations and be ranked 10th on each slate and not get an offer. You could have just one MOC nomination and get an offer as you are number one on that slate. There is just no way to know how the nomination slate looks in a given year. Last year could have had very few strong candidates and this year could have three outstanding candidates from your district.

Remember, it is not truly a "National" competition for most spots. Your WCS could win half the districts in the Nation but if you have two stronger candidates in your district this year you odds are long. Your WCS could also be lower than half the individuals in the Nation, but if it puts you on top of your district, you will get an offer.
