Okay, I have been thinking a lot about if my overall competitiveness is good enough for the Naval Academy. I want to see what all of you guys think so here it is.

ACT scores: MATH 28 READING 26

I am a Peer Leadership Club member at my high school. I play soccer and powerlifting, and I lettered in Varsity Soccer this year. I am the team captain of my soccer team. I am a student pilot, getting my pilot's license this July. I also am very involved in my community, with 100+ hours of community service. I am the program leader of a community service project called Hunterdon Outreach, which helps mentally and physically challenged children play sports.

I am in the top 20% of my high school class out of 740 students.

How academically qualified I am based on the Whole Person concept?

Your ECAs are pretty good, however, you might wanna retake the ACT and shoot for 30+ in Math just to be safe. Also take the SAT, you will be more competitive taking both tests.

It's hard to say who's competitive and who's not. It varies every year what Admissions is looking for. Some years, it's more leadership-based, others EC-based, etc. Special circumstances, availability of what your school has, the academic performance of your school, and many other factors come into consideration when your application goes in for review. To address the test scores: I took the SAT five times and the ACT once. Don't be afraid to take it over and over again; Don't settle for what you think is a good score. You never know when those extra points will come in handy for your application. Don't become too well-rounded. I remember my BGO telling me that if Admissions thinks you are too well-rounded, that you're trying to appeal to THEM, and that you're not pursuing activities that you enjoy.

Hopeful, maybe you should ask YOURSELF that question: Do you think you're competitive? Only you can really answer that. I'm not trying to sound rude or anything; I asked the same question when I was filling out my application. I think we all did/do. But basing your opinion off of other's responses might not always be the best idea. It's your own opinion that counts the most. Remember, you're your own worst critic, yet at the same time, the biggest source of motivation.

I wish you the best of luck Hopeful. You're definitely on the right track of things. Thumbs up to Class of 2014.

If I were to go purely off of your ACT scores I would have to say you aren't academically qualified. Luckily for you that means squat. There is not a cookie cutter model of who gets in and who does not. Academics is just one of the legs on the stool. Do you play some sort of sport? It sounds as though you exert yourself in other arenas so that might be enough. You never really know. Just fill out the application, apply to other places and don't back yourself into any corners. Whatever happens happens. If you don't get in, life goes on. USNA isn't the happiest place on earth anyways. Best of luck either way.
